We got him a twin with one mattress. Bought it on Wayfair.com and purposely got a bed with no footboard so that as he gets taller, his feet can hang past the end of the bed if needed. We also got it with under bed storage.

ETA: There just isn't enough room in his room for anything larger.

@Charm54: how was it to put the Ikea bed together? That's what I'm looking at but I've heard horror stories about the set up.

Queen on an IKEA bed, so no box spring. I really like the shrunks inflatable bed rails - they fit right under the fitted sheet. And fold up really easy for traveling.

@bushelandapeck: We moved LO to a full bed (her crib converted to a full) with just a mattress. Instead of a mesh guard rail, I rolled up beach towels (or you could use a pool noodle) and tucked them under the fitted sheet along each side to create an anti-roll lip/barrier. It has worked beautifully.

@bushelandapeck: We only put one on his bed when he first got it. Over six months, he managed to tear apart the mesh holding it together. We recently got rid of it. He doesn't fall or has since we removed it. When he visits my parents, one of the beds has them. He doesn't mind them.

@cascademom: do you just have the side protector thing? I feel like DS would fall out without two side to hold him in. And his room isn't really shaed so that we can fit his bed against the wall.

We went with a twin size, one mattress platform bed. When he gets older, we'll upgrade him to a full size bed and give his little brother his current bed. We've got at least 2 years until then.

If you moved your toddler to a bigger bed, which size did you choose? Also, did you go with a mattress and box spring or just a mattress? I'm leaning towards a full sized platform bed so that it's closer to the floor in case he falls out. Any suggestions for where to start shopping is super helpful too! :)
