@Mrs D: We had her in the room when DH took the front off the crib and then put up the gate so she can't fall out. Called it her big girl bed. Way easier then I thought.

@Smurfette: Maybe I will just do cold turkey once we have her big girl room prepped enough to put the bed in! Seems like it has worked best for a handful of ladies!

@Amelieisme: We only kept K in the room with me until she was 8 weeks - so we wont have as long and I want to have her transitioned before LO2 arrives (just dont want to be dealing with it when I am dealing with a newborn too!). I just ordered a door monkey,,,thanks so much! this was a major concern of mine since our foyer stairs are hardwood and we have no way to baby gate the railing!

we switched to a toddler bed, well just took off the front of the crib, around 25 months. She was climbing out. We did it on a Friday night. It went fine. She still waits for us in bed even though she can get in an out herself.

@mrsjyw: Thanks for the input - I thought about just doing the pool noodles bc K doesnt move around much as is! Congrats on the impending arrival...we still need to do a MI meet up soon!

@2PeasinaPod: K is such a climber at school I am shocked she has not climbed out of her crib yet - but fingers crossed!

@getjazzy: Your last statement is dead on! Its 50/50 no matter what! I am planning to have her heavily involved in decorating her "Big Girl" room so its fun for her - I hope that will be added incentive to like it.

Did you keep your first in your room as a newborn? We waited until LO2 was about 5 months old to transition my older kiddo to a big bed. He was just at 2 yo when we moved him. We had our younger baby in our room until 6 months (like we did with our first) so that gave our toddler more time in his crib before he had to transition over. We went cold turkey and after a rough night or two, he did fine. We waited a month to "give" the crib to the baby though so it wasn't too much change/jealousy at once. We left our room set up with toys, etc, but bolted furniture to walls, etc so that he could hurt himself with free reign in the room. We also got a door monkey (look on amazon) to keep him in the room. All worked beautifully.

We just recently moved DS when he was 23 months, for the same reason. Baby #2 is due in August and we needed the nursery. We went cold turkey and it worked perfectly. I was worried about confusing him going back and fourth so we had him help us with setting him his new room, spent time in there getting it ready prior to having the bed set up and then once it was ready, we moved his pillow, blankets and stuffies from his crib over, we read books in bed and snuggled as usual and then layed him down as we did with the crib for sleep and that was it! He hasnt looked back! We have a double bed (we already had one) with a guard rail on the bed and he's able to get in and out on his own at the foot of the bed but he doesn't. He stays in there until we come get him in the morning.

Good luck! Whichever method you choose I think it's basically a 50/50 chance that it will be an easy transition.

LO started climbing out of the crib a few months after he turned 2, so we didn't have much of a choice but to switch him to a toddler bed. Our crib converts, so we just took the front off and put a rail up.

We have to rub his tummy or his back for naps. He wouldn't go down on his own then mainly because some days he's more tired than others and wants to get up to play. At night (which we did at the same time), he miraculously stayed in his bed. We're looking to transition him to a double bed in his big boy room in the next few weeks to prepare for baby.

We were originally going to move DS into a new/toddler room and leave nursery as is, but didn't want to add too much change for him. Instead we swapped out furniture as it came in over the course of a few weeks. moved out the nursery dresser and added his new dresser, nightstand, etc. They all came in at different times so he had time to acclimate and the (twin) bed came in last. DH put it together and we went cold turkey from crib to twin bed that night, but DS knew it was coming because we talked it about with him weeks beforehand.

He did amazingly well! We use pool noddles as guards because the traidtional rail doesn't fit his bed, but he only fell off once or twice (and it's a low-lying bed). We transitioned at 2 years 2 months. (solely because we need the crib for lo#2, DS had never tried to climb or anything) and it never affected his sleep and he hasn't (knock on wood) tried to leave the room/etc.

:goodluck: !

So...DD is 21 months now and we are TTC for #2.

My plan is to move DD into her "big girl" room and leave the nursery the nursery for #2. I need to start transitioning her at some point.

I am getting a hand me down toddler bed - then she will move into a full size bed after that (likely up against the wall on one side with a rail on the other).

Wondering how you all transitioned you LO's? I was thinking naps at first for a few months (Saturday/Sunday only) - she is already on a cot at DayCare. Of course, there is fulltime oversight there to make sure she does not get up to Play.

Would you start with naps? Would you limit whats in there "play" wise to avoid that distraction or just start with it as it will be someday - i.e. full of toys/books? How long did it take for you to transition your LO?
