Since your crib doesn't convert then I would just go straight to a twin or full!

@looch: Oh my word, our child is not coming back into our bedroom. Talk about sleep deprivation! But I can see where that would help if a kid isn't a good sleeper.

@lilyann: We have considered going the floor bed route for a little while. Maybe we should revisit that.

@lamariniere: I'm hoping that by the time we're ready to transition, we'll have a need for the crib as a crib (though, ours doesn't convert so it would just be the mattress we're after).

Our crib converts to a toddler, but we needed it for the new baby, so we just bought a twin for DS. I didn't see the point of buying a toddler bed, I figured we would just have to buy another bed by the time he is 4-5 years old. That said, when the new baby is ready to transition out of the crib, we will convert the crib to a toddler bed to get the most use out of it before getting a twin for her.

We transitioned my 12 month old onto a floor bed. At first we used his infant mattress (also used as a toddler mattress) but he kept falling off so we used a twin instead. I think he loves having the extra room because he is a very active sleeper.

It depends...sometimes people have convertible cribs and they convert to a toddler bed. I've also read about situations where the parents put a toddler bed in the master bedroom, in case of night wake ups or whatever.

If you have the space for a twin, I'd at least go to that size.

I see no advantage whatsoever unless you're really tight on space. We just got a low twin bed from Ikea so the scale is still kid-friendly.

Is there really an advantage to using a toddler bed over a twin or full bed? We have an extra twin that we were thinking of using without the box spring to make it a little lower to the ground. It would be nice to not buy a new bed and new mattress just for the toddler stage.
