We have two of those railings on my son's bed, I too prefer the look of wood, but the functionality of the mesh is much better.

This is DS's twin with no rail. It is really low to the ground though. The first week I put DS's crib mattress on the floor next to the bed, along with some pillows. He fell out twice onto the crib mattress and then didn't fall out again.

Ours has a rail, but we opted to no convert since we had a new baby on the way. We got a toddler bed on CL and LO has loved it since day 1.

I hope a toddler bed helps you, bad sleep is no fun!

@lovehoneybee: We just switched D to his crib without the rail a couple weeks ago… He loves it! I talked about it with DH & the next thing I knew he walked out of D's room carrying the side to the crib! D loves climbing in his bed and surprisingly is awesome at staying in his bed (however, he has been a good night sleeper for us in general) Our crib has a wooden rail option but we were cheap and didn't buy it… We just took the side off and felt like the mattress was close enough to the ground, then D fell out and we just put pillows down along the side in case he fell out again (He hasn't fallen out again yet) Now we just ordered a new mattress for him to convert the "toddler bed" into a full bed! D is so excited for his mattress to get delivered and we bought a new comforter for it. I am a little nervous for the switch to a big bed but he is so excited about it and the toddler bed is getting short for him. Oh, we plan on putting the double bed up against the one wall and then have one of those removable railings for the other side.

ETA: I'm sorry you've been struggling with sleep! I hope it gets better for you… And, we need to get together again!

Evan's sleep has been SO bad the past week, and he doesn't seem as happy to be in his crib (although he still tries to climb into it). There are other factors in play, but I was wondering today if he would be happier in a toddler bed now. Maybe less feeling like he's caged?

Did you just convert your crib? If so, with what? Did your crib come with a conversion kit or did you use something else?

I was just looking at photos of my converted crib, and it doesn't have railings at all (at least on the Amazon page) but I'm wondering if a) one of the railing sets for other beds could work (I prefer the look of the wood railings...) and/or b) if I just need a removable railing, like this one:
