@Mrs. Confetti: I just bought This Is Not My Puppy...I have to get the kitten one since we have a dog and cat

If he likes ABCs you could try this (if you don't have it): http://www.amazon.com/ABC-Childs-First-Alphabet-Book/dp/0525475249/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381070597&sr=8-1&keywords=abc+alison+jay I like it because it has elements of nursery rhymes in the pictures so if you get tired of reading the C is for Cow you could say something about the cow jumping over the moon.

I also love Jane Yolen...the Dinosaur series is great! You could also try Mo Willems (Pigeon series)...he doesn't have a ton in board book format, but there is one about different modes of transportation!

@lemondrop: Lucky! I'd love an autographed Dinosaur book for Ellie-- those were her absolute favorite when she was smaller. Lorelei really likes the ones about how not to treat pets. She'll walk around and say, "Nervous! No throw piwwow at me. Kitty said it." Why she fixates on the what-not-to-do illustrations, I'll never know.

@Mrs. Twine: + 1 for Jane Yolen books! Love her stuff, she's friends with my aunt and uncle, so we get a lot of her's at holidays :) We're still waiting for him to sit still long enough for Owl Moon!

@Mrs. Twine: I am glad to hear that there are up's mixed in with the downs and that you are taking the time to take care of you  and Lorelei Might not love books yet, but with her budding vocabulary, I am sure she will get there in no time. You have a ton going on and such limited free time - no need to make a further list. Even just mentioning the idea of looking into the things he is most drawn to (photographs I think) and going from there gives me a better idea of what to look for...

@Mrs. Confetti: Thank you! Ellie is the super-reader, but I will drag Lorelei along kicking and screaming if I must ;) Really, she is turning into a book lover. If you want, I can personalize a list a little better if you tell me more about what he likes. You said he likes alphabet, but does he seem more drawn to simple illustrations, cartoon style, photographs...

Things here are going okay. We are still having some pretty "down" downs, but we are having lots of "ups." I just try to keep myself focused on the things that are going well and on not slacking on my personal end, and keep working to make things better. There have been a few times this week I've teared up watching her and Lorelei together and how wonderful they can be to one another. Ellie can be such a loving and generous and mature sister, and that is really gratifying to watch.

@debbiei8: Yes!! We have That's Not My Puppy - I love it - SO cute, he is so so about it. I feel like I should just hide the ones he gets stuck on totally out of reach so we can revisit ones like this. @betsyboop: We have Where is Baby's Belly Button, but I am totally going to check out the other two...thanks!!
@Mrs. Twine: was hoping you would reply - you are such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to kid lit with your uber-readers at home :) thinking of you and hope things with Ellie are looking up in her new school
@lemondrop: yes - it's the guilty feeling that gets me - I know I'm just trying to expand his horizons and change it up a bit, but I feel so bad taking away the books he loves most. Totally gonna check out sheep in a jeep - thanks!!

Sheep in a Jeep always makes me laugh.

I hear ya on the book rut, C is obsessed with the animal picture books. I can only point to the dog, cat, horse, and aardvark and make their noises so many times before going nuts. I feel so guilty housing the books because he loves them so much.

My 2 yr old likes Thomas the Train board books, Eric Carle board books, pretty much any board book. We buy them at Marshall's or half price books! We also have some of the Maisy lift the flap books that mrs. Twine suggested and he loves those as well. The Karen Katz lift the flap books are also popular.

There is a series of touch and feel books called "That's Not My..." (For example That's Not My Puppy). They are a little repetitive (you say that is not my... like 5 or 6 times) but some repetition is good for reading development. The touch and feel element really gets babies/toddlers involved in reading, which is also good for early literacy. I love these books. The baby I watch loves them as well! He's 11.5 months currently, but I'm pretty sure he will like them for a while...his older brother still liked them at 2 years old! I've already started buying copies of these for our LO!

Not sure if this helps, but I have found a number of books in board book format like Eric Carle, Corduroy, some Oliver Jeffers books, and I found a few others going to the bargain books section at Barnes and Noble. On amazon, you can often pick the format if you are looking for the sturdiness of board books.

The Lucy Cousins "Maisy" books are fun. Some have flaps, if he likes those. "More, More, More Said the Baby" is a nice one. Rachel Isadora is a favorite author. Lorelei loves photographs, so she really likes the "Busy, Busy" books. There are a few Jane Yolen "How Do Dinosaurs..." books. Byron Barton has really simple illustrations and appealing subjects (dinosaur bones, trucks, etc.). The "Good Dog Carl" books are beautiful. Both girls love(d) them. They are mostly wordless, though, which gives me some performance anxiety.

If I read the NFL Football ABCs one more time, I think I might die. I keep relocating and hiding it casually and hoping he will forget about it, and he keeps digging it out.

We have a zillion hand me down books and the ABC ones are most favored, and all things Boynton, but I would love to hear what board books your kiddo loves (we are sooooo not ready for real paper books yet).
