@Mrs. Jacks: I can't seem to find boys bogs at Sierra Trading Post  . $28 is a steal though!

@lamariniere: yes, lots of snow!! I've been warned that it may come in the next couple of weeks. In my ideal world my son would rock hunter boots with welly socks on the warmer winter days so we could be twins  . The Aigle boots are adorable!!

I bought a brand called Richter for DS last winter. They open wide and are Gore-Tex, so they are waterproof. Since you are in Canada, I assume you will be dealing with cold and snow for the winter? I would not get regular rain boots, they won't be warm enough. Get waterproof winter boots.

If you are looking for rain boots (in addition to winter boots), we have had good luck with the Aigle brand.

@Sammyfab: I think you just have to balance the fact that they'll wear them at all with their waterproof-ness. They were on sale for $28 dollars at Sierra Trading Post.

@banana: @betsyboop: thanks for the crocs recommendation but the smallest size seems to be a 6? Can you tell me if they're TTS? My LO has itty bitty feet...he's still in 4s (although I am buying 5s to wear with thicker socks) at 19 months.

@stargal: thankfully we've been able to try them on at the store or the boots I've bought were easily returned! I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding some second-hand though!

@mrstilly: thanks for the recommendation and for reassuring me that my son doesn't need to get used to wearing boots. I will definitely look into the Merryluks!

@SugarplumsMom: I feel like E is way more agile than Kai! Every time I see pics of her in her suit and boots I am amazed at how well she moves around! I will look into the Kamiks and Sorels but I worry they'll be too heavy.

@Mrs. Jacks: yes! We tried on Bogs at a store and I loved how lightweight they are but I read reviews that they're not very waterproof? They're also a little pricey but they are at the top of my list!

@looch: I've never purchased from Lands End! I'll check out the site and hopefully shipping isn't absurd! Thanks for the rec!

Also, if anyone has any tips on how to encourage my kid to wear heavier shoes, I'd love to hear them! He spent all summer in Natives which weigh nothing...and is still wearing them now but with socks. :/

I really like Lands End boots for kids. They have a super wide opening, which is good for getting their foot in, with room to spare for the stirrups of their snow pants.

Have you tried Bogs? They looked interesting and comfortable. We liked the look of Kamiks, but ended up getting a good deal on Lazy Ones, so that's what we got this year.

We have air walks for our snowboots, but I bet he wouldn't be too hip to them as they are rather stiff.

I have to add that the Icepop requires some wiggling to get on my DD's fat feet. Because of this, I'm opting for an open style instead of a slip-on opening next year. I read a ton of great reviews on Sorel Snow Commanders and next year, when she's even more mobile, I wouldn't mind spending more for those. But I'm happy with the Kamiks for her first toddler winter.

I ended up getting Kamik Icepop for DD. I think they're an older model (that would explain why I got a good deal on them). I expected them to be really heavy, but they're pretty light. They're rated to -25F/-32C, but because the sole itself is thin (if you take out the lining) they're not so heavy.

DD was thrilled to walk around in them. She doesn't like wearing socks and I imagine these are really warm, so I was really surprised! She was walking and running all around the house!

Two things to note: they run small. The lining is a thick felt that's narrow, but since the boot itself is like a little dome, it fits OK. I bought a size up because of the lining. The top mesh part is more pliable than what it looks like in the pictures.

As for Crocs, DD has the rainboot (unlined) and the ankle part is crazy tight! She has a fat foot and it's now impossible to put them on her with thick socks. She runs in them fine, but since they're stiff in the ankle, she's less agile in them. I loved them on her when they were still too big and it was easier to get them on and LOVED how they didn't fall off. But I now I realize they're a summer rain boot and can only be worn with thin socks.

@banana: I swore up and down I would never buy crocs but my lo is obsessed with the water room at our children's museum, and her shoes would be drenched after going! So last week I bit the bullet and bought her crocs. They're very practical for toddlers.

My son is 2 1/2 and has fat feet and legs and I can't get his feet into most traditional boots. Last year we used Stonz over his regular shoes, but the winter was so mild he only wore them a few times.

For this year I got Merryluks by Merryweather Outdoors (link below). They are similar to Stonz in that they are very flexible and soft-soled, but they do have a stiffer sole and more insulation. I bought thick wool socks for DS to wear with them and they fit well and he didn't have any complaints when we tried them on.

At 19 months, I don't think your son needs to get used to wearing regular boots. That will come naturally as he gets older. For right now I would prioritize whatever fits well, is comfortable for him, and will keep his feet warm and dry.

I've tried several different types/styles of rainboots on my 19 month old and he has HATED every single pair! I've tried to find lightweight boots because I know the issue is that they're super stiff and too heavy for him to walk in. Even to get him to stand up in them is a battle...let alone walk!

We absolutely 100% need boots soon because we live in Canada and the cold weather is approaching fast. Does anyone have any suggestions on lightweight (like, super lightweight) boots...both winter and rainboots?

{Stonz (they're waterproof boot-shaped covers for regular shoes) were recommended but I feel like my son needs to get used to wearing boots so they would be a last resort.}

Thanks!!
