Same as @Jess1483 and @ValentineMommy. We just went to the dentist today and he told us it was fine for DS to swallow a pea sized amount. If he does, we don't have to give him any fluoride supplements since he will get it from the toothpaste.

My LO is 2.5 years old. We recently taught him how to spit. My dentist said to switch to fluoride toothpaste when he knows how to spit. Like the tooth brushing song, we have a prompt for spitting. He sips water, then we go "swish, swish, spit" into the sink. It took some practice, but he likes. He took my Princess bubblegum toothpaste (for first trimester queasiness) and loves it.

As soon as I introduced a real toothbrush we taught her how to spit it out. I would say probably since 18m? Her teeth came in early and she had all teeth by 22ish months.

DS1 is 2.5 and just went to the dentist. They told us to switch from the training toothpaste to kids toothpaste. He was good about spitting for a while but he's back to swallowing. So for now, we're back to the training toothpaste. He goes to different phases.

DS is 2, and at his last appt our dentist told us to switch to fluoride toothpaste and that it's fine if DS swallows the little pea sized amount. Like @Jess1483, we also do not have fluoridated water, so our DS takes a fluoride supplement. The dentist said it's fine for him to have both.

We have used fluoride toothpaste since the beginning. We don't have fluoridated water, so my pediatrician and dentist have both advocated swallowing the tiny smear we use. I don't know when we'll start teaching him to spit. I'll probably ask at our next dentist appointment.

DD is 27 months old and been using the Earth's Best fluoride-free toothpaste for the longest time. Since we're using fluoride-free it's safe for her to swallow so I never bothered trying to teach her to rinse and spit but I wonder if I should try just to get her in the habit? When did you start teaching your toddler to rinse with water and spit?
