We just went to the dentist today and he told us it was fine for DS to swallow a pea sized amount. We recently taught him how to spit. My dentist said to switch to fluoride toothpaste when he knows how to spit. Like the tooth brushing song, we have a prompt for spitting. He sips water, then we go "swish, swish, spit" into the sink. It took some practice, but he likes. I would say probably since 18m? They told us to switch from the training toothpaste to kids toothpaste. He was good about spitting for a while but he's back to swallowing. So for now, we're back to the training toothpaste. Like @Jess1483, we also do not have fluoridated water, so our DS takes a fluoride supplement. We don't have fluoridated water, so my pediatrician and dentist have both advocated swallowing the tiny smear we use. I don't know when we'll start teaching him to spit. Since we're using fluoride-free it's safe for her to swallow so I never bothered trying to teach her to rinse and spit but I wonder if I should try just to get her in the habit? When did you start teaching your toddler to rinse with water and spit? </p>
