@Beehive: That gives me so much relief to hear! I was hoping that being home would get him back into his "safe" zone but it apparently is going to take some time. Good to hear that it does happen though.

@apis: Hahaha! I fell asleep a few times on our trip and DH had to come find me and shake me awake!

To add briefly to @beehive: I think that DS felt a little disorientated after having slept in travel cribs and/or hotel cribs, so even his own room felt a little strange to him, and he needed the familiarity of me laying on the floor nearby.

A word of warning for your DH, though, @tanjowen: make sure your DH doesn't *actually* fall asleep on the rug; it's a rookie mistake that I've definitely never, ever made and @beehive has never, ever had to walk quietly into the room and wake me up. Ever.

We had this problem once (around the same age too) - for us the solution was for DH to lay on the rug next to his crib until he fell asleep for a couple nights. He had to go in once in the middle of the night too I think. We explained to DS that we weren't going to stay in there, though (and we didn't - DH left the room once DS was asleep again). I think after a couple days of sleeping in his crib again, especially after naps in the crib in a slightly lighter room (when DH and I weren't there and weren't in his room for naps), he got used to sleeping in his room again and was fine.

We just returned from a week long trip to see family. Before the trip, our 2 year old would happily go down for the night in his crib, read a few books and pass out until morning. At my in laws home, he wasn't happy at all about bedtime, and I laid on the floor next to the crib until he fell asleep.

Now upon our return home, he refuses to fall asleep alone. DH is up in his room now, watching LO read books in his crib until he falls asleep. This was after 15 minutes of screaming, an interval where I rocked and sang to him and put him back down, and then another 10 minutes of screaming.

Will he get back into his routine, or any tips on how to get him back to happily going to sleep on his own out there?
