@hellobeeboston: we also did the back rubbing and that seemed to help settle him. We bought a turtle nightlight thing as well and he looooves to turn that on and watch the stars while he's falling asleep. I think he was having a hard time with the separation at night and needed some extra comforting.

Thanks everyone. He is up now fussing and I am so tired. It's 4am but he was up several tea all night as well. I will try a few different things and see if anything helps starting with lengthening his bedtime routine.

Our experience with the 18 month regression lasted just over a week and included 4+hours of awake time on two occasions. We did what we could to help him settle but we ended up going back to our routine in the end, an that's when he started sleeping like usual again. I hope it passes for you quickly!!

Oh no - I didn't know about the 18 month regression.

Anyway - my son is 16.5 months and we have had a few nights here and there and I think all related to teething - could that be it? We have a late teether though, so maybe you have been through this?

Also - we have found lately that he wants us to rub his back in his crib for a while now, never used to do that. I feel like he is just more aware that we are leaving him for the night
Good luck! Hopefully this is short lived and you get back to normal!

I'm feeling you @MrsMccarthy: , Alexis is doing the exact same thing and it's starting to break me down...

We had been enjoying a really settled period of sleep that even included self-settling to sleep and sttn on occasion but since we come back from holiday a week ago it's all gone out the window :-(

I have no suggestions but do let me know if you find the magic solutions!

I'm so sorry..we have been there with the long wakeups and they are hard. :(

I guess I'm in for it because I am trying to shorten lo's bedtime routine (from about 45 minutes to maybe 25?) and that's the opposite of what @mrs. pen suggested... we shall see! We definitely have had some earlier wakeups this week but nothing too bad (so far!! Please please please, sleep gods, spare us!!)

I'm so sorry, honey! I can't imagine what you're going through but I bet your EXHAUSTED.
I don't really have suggestions but, I am not surprised he is acting this way because the 18m sleep regression is apparently THE MOTHER of all sleep regressions.
I think Mrs.Pen wrote a blog about how she and Jacobi got through it early this week on HB blogs.
*hugs*

Lately my 18 month old son has been having a really hard time settling to sleep even if I nurse him down. He will usually move from his side to his tummy and then pop up on all fours them pop up to a string position and wail. I feel so bad for him and I have no idea why he is having such restless sleep but its making things really hard. Last night he was up stirring from 2am to 3:30 and he isn't going down well tonight. Any suggestions?
