@T.H.O.U.: Absolutely. I think my focus is a 2 1/4 - 2 3/4 age group essentially as a lead in to our 3 year old crossfit classes. Where the kids have to learn to be on their own and follow instructions. I have also found differences between kids who go to daycare and those who don't at this age often because of different experiences. Mostly just the ability to follow instructions and separate from their parents (though my son goes to daycare and you wouldn't know from how he hangs on me).

I have taught down to 18 months before in Gymnastics but this is a little different. I don't have all the same equipment and I want it to be less gymnastics focused.

@sloaneandpuffy: Yeah the idea is a 20 to 30 minute long class. I think my numbers come out to about 18 minutes. I love drink breaks!

@cmomma17: I would love to have some "open" time but I don't think my facility would be appropriate for it. I am going to offer it at a crossfit gym so lots of weights and things like that.

When I taught dance (never as young as 1-3, but still), I would leave some time at the end of class for my youngest students to just go nuts. Call it "free dance" or something like that. After following structure and rules for almost an hour I just let them be wild and get everything out of their systems to some fun music. Some kids would choose to sit down (or lay down, lol) at that time.

Sounds GREAT! I would say add in a lot of time to pad things out because it takes little ones kind of a long time to get where they're supposed to be a start doing what they're supposed to be doing.

The only comment I have found amongst parents about toddler classes is that they all learn at different paces especially between 1-3.

We did a gym class when my son was just shy of 2. They had individual stations and the teachers circulated around helping children through them. Parents learned how to assist, too. the kids went where they wanted to go, so it was relatively unstructured. They started with circle time and a song or two. That was the only downside--little boys (often) won't sit still that long! It usually ended up being mayhem. I think circle time is just tough at that age, especially for kids who aren't in daycare/preschool. They also did bubbles, which was good.

Okay, my son is 2 years old and I live in a very small town. In order to have things I want, I have to make them happen. So I am thinking of starting a fitness class for 18m - 3 year olds. I think I have a place to hold it I just need to figure out what I want to do. The plan is a parent involved class where parents are the helping hands.

So, if you have done any toddler classes (swimming, gymnastics, dance, gymboree, etc) what did you like? What didn't you like?

My current plan is:
2 min focus/skill work (such as freeze, forward rolls, animal walks, balancing, jumping)
3 min Warm-up to a song (such as hokey pokey, wheels on the bus)
3 min Activity (such as catching scarves, sharing bean bags, body parts, etc.)
4 min Obstacle course (with a theme like backwards, over/under, around, etc)
2 min Separation Time (activity for the kids teacher led with parents stepping away).
3 min Ending Game (Duck Duck Goose, Cookie Monster, Red Light/Green Light)

What do you think? What would you like to see? What am I missing?
