DD1 has had a ton of trouble in that department.
We did a two month miralax program and it helped but I didn't like it as a long term solution.
What has worked for her is a breakfast every day of steel cut oats with flax seeds. We limited her milk consumption a bit and noticed that really helped. I give her a cup of apple juice with her oatmeal too. She has trouble with bananas and white carbs. We avoid those triggers if we can or make sure to offer her berries or another high fiber option to counteract the binding food.

Oddly, DD2 eats the same foods and has no problems whatsoever. Since birth she's been an amazing pooper. DD1 didn't poop for her first three days and had to be "prodded" in order to do so. DD2 pooped 12 times her first day.

@gotkimchi: I've been thinking about trying those!! Maybe I will.

@Mamaof2: OMG that sounds sort of gross lol. But I think I'd rather she was on pear juice than oj anyways bc oj bothers my stomach and I'd worry about that :)

@jedeve: she doesn't like grapes!! Weirdo. Maybe I should try again. I don't know if she's good enough at chewing for raisins yet.

@Mae: not sure if it was a fluke for us or what but DD had awful constipation and her DR put her on Miralax and it did help but I didn't want her on it long term even though they say its safe.

I was on another parenting forum at the time and a naturopath suggested fish oil and OJ every day. So for 2 weeks I did fish oil/oj and half a dose of miralax and then I stopped the miralax and stayed on the oj/fish oil and the constipation was GONE!

Not sure how or why it works but it did for us - she is 4.5 and still gets this everyday!

We use Nordic Naturals fish oil and when she was younger and couldn't eat the pill I would pop it in her mouth and she would get the oil that way.

@Mrs. Bee: yea it may be genetic :/

@jedeve: lol I don't think it is the worst thing either. although every time a mom mentions to me "well timmy has never had anything but breastmilk or water...." I get stabby.... :) I just was curious if there was more i could do.

@Mrs. Champagne: yea I've heard that too which is part of why I was asking. But also I feel like taking her off of it would be awful because constipated toddler is not a happy toddler lol

@MrsSRS: maybe she will grow out of it! I don't want to eliminate dairy because she doesn't nurse and she eats *just okay*. I feel like if I cut out cheese and yogurt she'd miss a lot of calories.

For us what ultimately fixed the problem was removing dairy until DS was 2yo. Prior to that he truly needed juice. Now he's fine and I just make sure that the days he has more than one serving of dairy he also has an orange or grapes or raisins.

I say if it works than keep doing it. But I'm ok with juice and don't think it's bad. DS2 isn't as regular and gets prune juice often to help. I think it's just his system. Meanwhile big brother eats 5 cheese sticks a day and has no problems going.

A nurse once told me that giving them something like juice or prunes all the time isn't helpful because they become dependent on it.
She recommended warm water instead when needed. But I'm not sure how accurate that is?! Warm water helps my son but he doesn't have constipation issues often.

But. If you're only giving 4 ounces of juice that doesn't seem like too much if it's helping keep her regular.

@Mae: so I feel kinda strongly about this. JUICE IS NOT THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD. Yes, it is high in sugar and low in fiber. So it's not an ideal substance to drink just for the hell of it. But if a kid is constipated, you have a reason to give them juice. Both my kids have had issues with it and juice keeps things moving. We did Miralax, but learned it hasn't been studied in children and there is some suggestion it might be absorbed differently than in adults. Tons of stuff that you use to get them to poop is high in sugar (raisins, prunes, etc. My youngest's poops have gotten regular since we put him on iron drops. Because iron drops have a ton of sugar to make them palatable. And that's fine - he needs the iron. So just because Sally so and so has never tasted juice, do not feel guilty about it at all!

for our family it's genetic. i have had constipation my whole life and both charlie and olive have it too. a little bit of miralax helps right away (once you've cured acute constipation), and we use it once in a while. we couldn't live without it!

Man do I hate talking about poop in "public" but I need some ideas because our ped just says "give her juice" and I want to know if there are other options.

My LO is 16mo and has struggled with constipation ever since she started eating more solid food. She does not eat very much of the BRAT diet at all. She used to drink whole milk but doesn't anymore (just water and juice right now). She eats yogurt most days (2-4oz) and gets cheese 1-2 times/day (I upped it when she quit milk to get more fat/calcium in her diet). I DO try to feed her high fiber foods, lots of fruits and veggies especially pears, plums, peas and berries.

And still. We give her about 4oz of pear juice every morning and that is juuuuust enough to keep things mostly normal. If we skip a day she is immediately constipated. If she eats half a banana or an extra serving of cheese, same.

I try to get her to drink as much water as I can but I can't force it (she drinks maybe 10-15 oz water/day now that she is off milk).

I guess if we have to keep giving her juice it's fine... but it seems like we shouldn't HAVE to do that just to keep things running.

Anyone have any success with any other dietary changes? Or any other suggestions?
