@StbHisMrs: No problem, I learned about using them when P was just a few months old. Lavender is a natural expectorant & I just read that a drop of peppermint oil on the bottom of the foot can help calm a cough for a few hours.... Since P is so petite I haven't used peppermint oil directly on her bc it's strong @ 20 mths I think it'd be fine though! ;)

@runsyellowlites: Awesome, I'll empty out my scentsy warmer, and get some lavender to put around her bath, thank you!

@regberadaisy: The cough started on Sunday, she had a fever that would spike up to 103 for 4 days. I took her to see the ped on Monday and they said it was a virus, and to bring her back in if her fever came back. She had a low grade fever yesterday.

@babyboecksmom:I do worry about pneumonia, my son has had it twice and it's fast and scary!

We used a humidifier and it got worse. I don't recommend those just because of my personal experience. My daughter has to use a nebulizer with albuterol medicine, on the tail end of colds because the cough gets really bad if I don't. Does wonders. Supposedly she will grow out of this. You might consider going to the doctor at this stage if she's getting worse.

@StbHisMrs: Like @regberadaisy said, I would monitor it closely. DD also had pneumonia and it started like that.

@StbHisMrs: I have in the past but they seem to work better in the bathroom (since it gets so much steamier) & the lavender in her bath helped calm her for bedtime.

I totally use them in my scentsy thing all the time though just to refresh the house! :)

How long has she had a cough? Is her nose runny? Did she previously have a cold?

This is how my LO's pneumonia got started so I would keep a close eye!

@runsyellowlites: Thank You! Do you know if you can put it in a vaporizer? My Mom has quite a few essential oils, I'll have to see if I can borrow some.

@MerryC: Yes Vicks on the feet and chest, I have been elevating her head with pillows too. I've tried to give her medicine with a syringe, a cup, and mixed into applesauce. She does ok with it mixed in, the syringe comes right back out and she won't touch the cup. So stubborn!

I had to pick her up from the baby-sitters yesterday after her lunch came back up, but she laid her down with milk right after lunch. A big no no, today I sent only coconut water and no milk! I don't feel too bad sending her, since she picked it up there but my friend won't admit it ;) Then my Mom called me and let me know that C is sick to his stomach. Isn't this summer? We made it through fall and winter, this is terrible.

So sorry! Poor baby.

Try adding the vicks to her feet too, with socks.. Is there a way to elevate her head while she sleeps? That usually helps my two, so things can drain out of their head. How are you trying to give the regular cough syrup? Could you try a tylenol syringe instead of a spoon, or dilute it and try a straw? I'd just try to encourage as many warm liquids as possible, however she'll take it.

Fwiw, I know dairy usually increases mucous, so cutting back on any she might be getting could help too.

Hope you both get some sleep soon!

@StbHisMrs: Peppermint oil & Lavender oil are both good for coughs. We do steam sits in the bathroom with peppermint oil sprinkled on the tub floor & have put a drop or two of Lavender in P's bath.

I also made a homemade coconut oil vicks rub b/c I could use the peppermint rather than just eucalyptus (I think it's been working much better).

have you tried a little bit of honey? Just it straight could help coat the throat so maybe it would help the coughing stop some..

Ack, it happened again at naptime after lunch! She sounds so congested, she's snoring away on the couch now and she never snores. This is so terrible :(

The fever that M had last week has now become a pretty bad cough. At first it was more of a gag cough, now it's really mucousy. If she still has a fever after today I have to take her back to the dr.

I can't get her to take any medicine though. I tried giving her Matys Mom all natural cough syrup (honey) mixed with applesauce, no. Back to our regular stuff, Hylands Nighttime Cold N Cough and that ended with her gagging and throwing up all over the couch.
After a bath I put baby vicks on her chest, plugged in a humidifier, and a cup of warm lemon water with agave syrup stirred in, she refused it. So here we are waking every half hour..

Any suggestions much appreciated :)

Eta she's 20 months old.
