My LO does this and my solution is to tighten and then press the loosening button once. It relieves the pressure on her but doesn’t actually loosen it enough that it fails the pinch test.

I have the same seat in my car, and LO (3 and FF) used to complain all the time. She figured out how to take the strap covers by her neck off, and didn't complain for months after that, even when I immediately tightened the straps to compensate for the covers being off. I have no idea why this worked, maybe she liked the greater range of motion in her neck? And then about 4 months later she complained that the straps were too tight on her neck, so I put them back on and she was happy again. Kids are weird!

@peaches1038: it is at or below but with a no rethread harness it can be really hard to achieve "at."

This seat is known to have a slightly shorter crotch strap that does bother some kids (lots of kids, of course, don't care though). But I think it might also just be age...

@catgirl: great! Thank you. The manual says at or below the shoulders for rearfacing, but I wasn’t sure if they were a bit high. The crotch strap is in the furthest position - there’s only 2 options unfortunately

The harness looks a bit too high to me. The straps need to be below the shoulders. What position is the crotch strap in?

You could also try changing the recline... Sometimes that changes how the seat will feel on a kid's back.

I adjusted the harness height but I’m not sure if it’s too high now. It didn’t make a difference in his complaints this morning anyway

I find this happens when I need to rethread the shoulder straps on my son's car seat. Like they feel too tight because they are too low? Anyway, when I rethread them he no longer complains until he grows again.

My 2.5-year-old bloats up like a horse resisting having the girth cinched -- he'll tense up his butt and take a huge breath. We have to distract him (usually with tickling) to get him to relax and tighten adequately.

My son complained a few times about the tightness. DH would reach over and pretend to loosen it and ask him if that was better. He always said yes :silly: .

But I have to say that if he's that upset about it, something does sound like it's wrong with either the placement or the tightness.

My 3 yr old does this on and off and even demands I stop the car and come fix them. I'm pretty sure it's just that she doesn't want to sit still and she thinks they're "tight" when she tries to sit up more/wiggle. She will even change her mind mid-drive and say they're not tight, so I do think it's an empty complaint. That said, I hear you on the frustration! Now that DD1 has a baby sister, I talk to her while buckling DD2 in to her seat and she seems to understand a little better that it's for safety (though she does still complain at times).

@Adira: Yes I was going to say also that the tightness maybe correct but maybe the position needs to be adjusted. Like where the shoulder straps come out in the back of the seat and where the crotch buckle is in the front. Just thinking out loud since we can’t really see it and know.

Ugh my son does this but not the whole time. He’s always been horrible in the car seat. Sometimes he starts screaming that his penis isn’t working but he means it’s too tight on his crotch. You have to laugh but I know that a kid screaming in the car is no joke, you feel like you are going to crash! Sorry I don’t have an answer for you :(

We get this too, I think he just doesn't want to be stuck in a seat. He has tried to convince me that he will "stay in his seat with out the buckles". He thinks of them as punishment for being wiggly. We talk a lot about safety.
