@Anagram: of course it's completely your call, but I looked into the soy/estrogen thing when deciding what to feed our son, and a lot of it seems to be myth. Plant phytoestrogens, which many legumes such as chickpeas have, don't seem related to human estrogen. I look to societies with high soy consumption, and feel comforted that there don't seem to be problems there. Ymmv! Fortunately there are lots of options.

@Anagram: I do a smoothie in her lollacup everyday- she likes them and you can put so many things in there. I put a whole boiled egg, avocado, olive oil, collards (for calcium!), you name it. Almond and peanut butter- I make my own hemp milk and you can make it pretty strong...

@Anagram: R outright REFUSED nutramigen formula (I also tried to stop pumping because I was over it)...homegirl was having none of that! But, our pedi gave us the toddler one and I think it 'tastes' better so I was able to slowly wean her to that. Have you ever tried nutramigen?

Another pastina trick is to cook an egg into the pastina, stirring constantly so it's practically invisible, just tiny bits. Then you traditionally add milk to make like a porridge, but you can just add non dairy milk or olive oil and garlic or whatever. We always called it Italian baby food and ate it well into our teens and when we were sick in our family ;-) just make sure the egg is fully cooked of course lol.

I used to give LO pasta with a 'sauce' of mashed avocado, olive oil, garlic and Italian seasoning and she loved it. She still eats it noe that she can have dairy but I add parm. If bigger pasta is an issue, try pastina - it's like the tiny stars.

@Anagram: Yeah, my guess is because it wasn't sweetened. We buy the Plain Almond Milk Greek style Yogurt, so it's also unsweetened, so I mix in a puree or something with it to get him to eat it. I usually don't have to mix very much and I've even gotten him to eat it plain, so you could try doing half/half and then decreasing how much puree you add to it. Good luck! :D

@Adira: I haven't tried it, but that's a good idea! I spent $8 on a huge container of unsweetened coconut yogurt and then LO refused to eat it and I ended up having to throw it away after a couple of weeks. Totally wasted (I also didn't really like it).

But duh, I should have tried mixing it with a puree she likes.

@MoonMoon: yeah, I've been looking into hemp. I wouldn't give soy to LO because she has a slight intolerance and I also wouldn't want to risk the estrogen mimicking properties of soy. The glax oil with DHA is a good idea! I'll have to start researching benefits.

My vegan friends give soymilk or hemp milk, which are the fattiest plant milks, and add coconut oil or flax oil to them. My LO isn't allergic, but I'm planning on skipping wcm, and this will be my plan, combined with bf. Flax oil with DHA seems to be a great supplement in general-try Udo's or Spectrum refrigerated brands.

How'd I miss this post??

Xander is allergic to dairy so he drinks hemp milk. It has almost as much fat as WCM, so I feel pretty good about his fat intake. I also feed him a TON of almond milk yogurt which has a decent amount of fat AND protein.

I also try to feed him more meats to supplement his lack of protein in his milk.

@Anagram: Aw, poor baby. My "feel like a horrible mom moment" was when I tried giving him the Sensitive formula for intolerance because I was tired of paying for Alimentum and hoping he was outgrowing a true allergy (around 9 months). He threw up for hours and was shaking, it was just awful.

His meals improved drastically when he outgrew it, and it was one of my happiest parenting moments too when we could share ice cream ;) I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - my pedi kept telling me it's very common to outgrow it around a year or a little after, and it seemed so unlikely, but it happened for us. Keep the faith, haha!

@keepcalmcarrie: we tried Alimentum, but she had really bloody diapers. That was my "feel like a horrible mom" moment, because I was SO excited she drank it, I gave it to her for 3 days straight (instead of slowly transitioning her) and then her diapers were like..filled with blood, not just streaks--big globs. =(

@Anagram: LO also straight up refused Neocate, but he looooooved Alimentum. I gave up BFing because I couldn't (okay, wouldn't) stick to the MSPI diet. So he was on Alimentum until he was over his dairy allergy. Maybe your ped office could give you a sample to try?

@Mrs. Taco: so far, my LO has always, always refused Neocate. I have tried since she was 7 months because I've wanted to give up EPing and this stupid MSPI diet for that long...but she just won't take it. She would literally rather starve herself, I guess.

I even devised this long-term plan of starting with .5 oz Neocate to 4.5 oz Bm.....then slowly upping to 1 oz neocate and 4 oz BM....and so on. But she got to 1.5 oz of neocate and started refusing the whole damn bottle, causing me to have to toss whole bottles of BM/formula. :crying:

She likes to make my life....interesting.

I hope this isn't totally unhelpful, but my LO outgrew his dairy allergy at 14 months - so if your little is 11.5 months, there is hope!! His allergy was pretty severe - he would projectile vomit if we gave him milk, cheese, pretty much anything. But I kept trying little samples, once a month or so, and suddenly it was like a switch flipped.

Until that happened for us, I mashed an awful lot of avocados. I also tried hemp milk, but he hated it. I think @adira: has a LO with dairy intolerance (she recommended hemp milk to me!) so she might have some good tips. Could you try other nut butters too, like almond? Maybe a slightly different flavor.

@Mrs. Taco: yup, she likes all sausages and she likes salmon. Sausage is her favorite food, basically and since I've been avoiding dairy and soy for 8 months myself, I have our go-to brands. But she just doesn't eat much, in terms of volume.

I'm been tracking her calories the past few days and she's only averaging about 80-120 calories for each of 3 meals, then getting an additional 280-300 calories through BM each day, totally anywhere from 550-600 calories a day. Since she's going to be 1 soon, if I cut down the BM, I feel like I need to up her food calories to 200/meal. Then I won't stress over how much or little milk alternative she's drinking.

@brownie: oooh, I'll have to get some sunbutter--I've never given that to LO. Good idea!

I know there's Neocate Splash and if I have to go down that road later, I totally will. But I'm going to try to meet her needs with foods and milk alternative first. If her weight gain gets thrown off, then I'll consider the Splash.

I'm crazy about watching her weight (because she's always been a bad eater/drinker) so I like to think I ward off any weight problems before they start but obsessing about these things early.

@Anagram: R has severe anaphylactic allergies to both WCM and eggs so we deal with a similar struggle. Right now, she is drinking a hypoallergenic toddler formula because she can't tolerate soy or almond milk...her pediatrician/allergist felt this was the best option for the next year until hopefully she is able to drink one of the two.

As for calories, have you tried proteins? R LOVES chicken sausage which should be texture friendly for your little one. You have to be careful because a lot of them have cheese but we've found a few that don't. She also eats a lot of fish...salmon, tuna, white fish, etc. Many have healthy fats as well as calories.

It's definitely tricky and we are going to meet with a nutritionist to check what shes eating.

Sunbutter was a go it. It had just a few more calories per bite than peanut butter. We did peanut butter on bananas a lot. Coconut yogurt from Whole Foods was a godsend. I used coconut oil to cook the scrambled eggs up. We did a LOT of meats like bacon and pepperoni. Not great but something.

We also used Neocate Splash which is a hypoallergenic food product. That helped more than anything else. It was expensive but so worth it for my son. He was Failure to Thrive from 6 months - 18 months old.

ETA: we tried adding oil to purees and he stopped eating them completely.

LO is also a little behind on eating skills--she eats finger foods about 50% and purees still 50%. (She's 11.5 months old).

She loves the texture of things like cooked macaroni noodles, overcooked vegetables, bits of sausage, scrambled or over-medium fried eggs, etc. She will spit out even the tiniest bits of harder breads, she isn't into other carbs I've tried so far (muffins, breakfast breads). I tried to give her soft bread bits with peanutbutter on it, and she wouldn't eat it.

Should I just start putting coconut oil in a syringe and pumping it into her mouth after every meal? :silly:

Parents who have children who can't have any dairy:

-How do you make up for the calories in WCM? All the milk alternatives seem to have way fewer calories.

-How do you make up for the proteins and fatty acids of WCM?

I'm less concerned with Calcium and Vitamin D as I know I can buy fortified (commercial) brands of almond and coconut milk that has those added, but in those coconut and almond milks, the calories are way less which is a concern for me, because LO is not a great eater as it is. All the websites I can find for toddler nutrition advise adding cream or cheese to everything (to add calories) and I can't do that, of course.

I know I can cook veggies in Olive or Coconut oil. LO doesn't like peanut butter so far (I've been trying it with her recently and it's a no go).

Coconut cream is high calorie, but I can't find a version that doesn't come in cans, and I like to avoid canned food when possible and definitely wouldn't give her something canned on a daily basis.

What do you do to make up calories with your LO?
