Can you do a later bedtime on the nights that he has had a nap? Also, on days that my daughter hasn't napped (she's only 2), I let her watch some TV in the late afternoon before dinner. This might not be the best parenting here, but it really seems to calm her down, since it's the only way to get her to sit still and just chill for a while. Otherwise she's off in her playroom throwing a temper tantrum because the play-doh didn't do what she wanted it to.

My son just turned 3. When he fights his nap I let him look at books in bed. He always passes out for 2 hours 10 minutes after I leave. Of course that means he flights bedtime until about 9, too, which is a bummer. He usually sleeps until 7 or 7:30?

Hmm, interesting about the rest time...I might have to try that.

I am to get him in the bath at 7 and it takes us anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to actually get into bed. I could possibly get him to bed at 6:30 on days when he doesn't nap, but it wouldn't be consistent, and he and I don't do well without a routine.

I have tried to let him sleep longer in the mornings, he does better with getting in the car when he's had some time to be awake. Even on weekends, he's standing by 6:15, he's a morning person, lol.

My DD is 3 yrs 4 months and when she doesn't nap she goes to bed at 6:30 - which means she falls asleep at 7pm.

We get home at 5 so its a rush to eat, bathe, and play for a bit but otherwise the tantrums come full force and its a nightmare! Def do an early bedtime on the days he doesn't nap

eta: do you need to wake him 30 mins before you leave? My DD eats breakfast at school so I wake her at 6:45am and we are out the door by 6:55am - maybe an extra 20 mins of sleep in the morning may help!

What time does he go to bed?

I like @Weagle: 's idea of quiet time. It has worked a few times with my son. I'm also dreading my son dropping his afternoon nap too but he switches schools in a few weeks and the big kids don't nap. I think our strategy is going to be try to have an earlier bedtime at 7:30ish instead of 8, and still nap on the weekends when necessary. I know my son definitely still needs to nap though and he becomes really difficult at the end of he day of he hasn't napped.

Take this with a grain of salt, as we're not at this point yet. I would stop trying to make it naptime, but institute a rest time instead. I wouldn't set it up like you're hoping he will nap, and call it something different. When I worked at summer camp, we called it FOB. "Flat on back" or "feet on bed". Basically that was the only rule (based on age). The kids could do whatever they wanted for an hour (read, listen to music, write letters, etc), but it had to be done with their feet on the bed. They usually fell asleep :)

My son is 3.5 years old and is currently enrolled in a summer camp from 9-12 during the week. We get him up for the morning at 5:45 and we're out the door at 6:15. He goes to my parents house and then they bring him to camp.

It's a nature camp and he comes home exhausted, like can't stand up anymore, he's so tired. But on some days, he can't fall asleep. On those days, he's a terror at night, because he's tired, but he still needs a bath, etc.

The problem is basically that if he does nap during the afteroon (he gets woken up after 2 hours) is that he takes a long time to fall asleep, like almost an hour. If he doesn't take the nap, he literally screams and has a tantrum, but he falls asleep in minutes.

WWYD? Drop nap or keep nap? In September, he will have to drop the nap anyway, as he will be going to an afternoon preschool from 12-3.
