@Portboston: My oldest is this way (4.5 yrs). In her opinion, sleep is for the weak LOL. She has a hard time shutting her brain off. When she was little, we either had to bounce/rock/swaddle and shush her for about 45 min to get her out. If we left her to her own, she would never get to sleep.
Even now, at 4.5 yrs old, we still need to sit in her room and remind her to close her eyes, stop playing with (whatever toy she tries to play with), etc. But we stay consistent and it has gotten a little better over time.

@MissLace: isn't it awful!? If it helps at all, I figured out he's going through a pretty big leap right now. Google "leap 9 and sleep" and you'll find a lot of other tired moms as well. I'm crossing my fingers this is why his sleep has gone from not great to awful!

@Portboston: i feel you. my daughter is also 14 months and most nights (after it taking anywhere from 45 mins to 2 hours to get her asleep in her crib) will still wake up unconsolable 4-5 times a night. its miserable.

To give you hope, my oldest was a terrible sleeper and, at that age, she would cry for up to 2hrs every night. We moved her to a floor bed and she would spend those 2hrs flinging her bed about, jumping, yelling, then eventually fall asleep in a heap on the bed. By the time she was 2.5, she would lie in her bed and drop off quickly, all by herself. She started STTN just before her 3rd birthday. Hang in there!

Some babies / kids use crying as a means to release tension and stress, maybe it's just his way of winding down?

@SweetiePie: he definitely is overtired sometimes. Those times will be the longer to get to sleep nights for sure. But other times he is totally well rested.

@caterw: maybe it's just certain kids! My husband always seems to have FOMO so maybe my LO inherited it from him 😜 We have the same napping situation. Also, his tired signs are completely unreliable! I can put him to bed the second he yawns and/or rubs his eyes and he won't go to sleep for a half hour!

My daughter is almost three and she has always been like that! She needs some personal time to chill out, talk to her stuffed animals, look out the window, etc before she falls asleep. I can count on one hand the number of times she has just fallen asleep randomly since she was a baby- she can stay up endlessly without napping if I don't make her go to bed.

@Portboston: Could he be over tired? How much time awake is he spending? Fighting sleep or having a hard time falling asleep sometimes means overtired (but not always).

My 14 month old has ALWAYS fought bedtime. He's never been a great sleeper and struggled with reflux in the beginning. We sleep trained at 3.5 months for falling asleep and again at 7 months to cut down on MOTN wake ups. He finally sttn right after he turned 1 but he has always cried himself to sleep. Never hysterically but whining and fussing plus some babbling. It will range from 10 min to maybe 30-45 min depending on the day but he never peacefully lays down and just goes to sleep. He does this for naps too. For the record, we have a solid routine, he takes a bottle at the beginning of the routine and we put him in his crib fully awake.

Has anyone gone through this? Did your kiddo ever stop fighting bedtime?
