DD is just over 2 and we are going through something similar, except she leaves her room and comes into ours. I read that night terrors start somewhere around 2 so I wonder if that could be it. We bring DD back to her room and talk to her a little and tell her every is OK and that it is still night night time, then we leave. It usually works.

My LO did this (though still in crib) around a year and to be fair had a hard time at bedtime at night. We got a nightlight, glow in the dark stars/moon (she loooves the moon) and had to start with sitting with her and then gradually moving out of the room. The night wake ups got better once she was more comfortable in her room again. And this was a kid who loved pitch black and made sure the door was shut!

There is an 18 month sleep regression between 16-20 months that's pretty tough. There is a milder one at 2 but I distinctly remember the random wake ups and screaming around 18 months. We just held firm on holding and snuggling for a few minutes until calm and putting him back down with the same bedtime songs and leaving. It lasted about a month?

@FaithFertility: We have a cloth wipes warmer by the change table in his room, which has a night light, so it's not completely pitch black. Maybe it's still too dark though. I'll add a proper night light tonight and see how that works. Last night wasn't quite as bad. But we still spent half the night in there with him.

@Mama Bird: I don't think he's teething. He hasn't shown any of the usual signs. I'll check his gums this evening. Thanks for the tip.

Night light?! He might be scared to wake in the dark of his room!

DD is 2 and in a full bed if she wakes MOTN she will cry at her door if we do not tend to her! We tried a night light mad no difference with her, but maybe?!

Is he teething? Two year molars are pretty painful. My son sleeps like a log, but they had him waking up at night for months, and he refused to sleep in his bed once he woke up.

Since about 9 months of age, DS has been sleeping through the night, approx. 12-13 hours. We got in the habit of holding him in our arms to go to sleep, and then transferring him to the crib asleep, but at least he didn't wake up crying for us.

Fast forward to this fall, when he started climbing out of the crib and becoming more independent. We converted the crib to a toddler bed, and his sleep got progressively worse. Lately, he has woken up anywhere from 4-8 times a night, gotten out of bed, and screamed and hit/kicked at the door until we come in to soothe him. If he woke before, he would only cry for a few minutes and put himself back to sleep. The last few nights we have been lying by his bed and patting/shushing him back to sleep. But invariably one of us ends up spending the whole night on the floor, because the wakeups are so frequent.

Any advice, or is this just a phase? He is 21 months.
