What if you dropped him off and then came back 10 min, 15 minutes in, then 20 the next time, then the whole time? Maybe he's learning that as long as he throws a fit, he can get the workers to bring him to you. If you go to him, maybe he won't be so hysterical because he'll learn that you'll come back.

@T.H.O.U.: I was thinking of setting him up with a snack for when we get there. We have a bit of a car ride to get there so he's usually snacking in the car, but he does love to eat, LOL.

@PawPrints: we've had 3 lessons. The first time, he apparently cried off and on the whole time but was consolable and when I picked him up he FREAKED out. Like OHMYGODITHOUGHTYOULEFTFOREVER. The next time, they brought him to me after 15 mins. The daycare lady brought him out of the room and let him walk around the gymnasium a bit but that only lasted so long. This past week, he made it almost the whole time, but again, cried off and on the whole time, hysterically. She did the walk around the gym thing again and every time they walked back towards the daycare room he flipped out.

@CakeLady: maybe I can let him bring puppy blanket. I already allow his pacifier to go in with him even though he's only allowed it at nap time!

How many times have you dropped R there? It's taken DD2 At least 3 day long stints at the emergency backup daycare at DH's office to not be hysterical to the point where they have to call us...she still is pretty hysterical at drop off and pick up, but fine in between. I feel a little mean, but I think that continuing to take her lets her know it isn't optional...and hopefully she'll realize it's a safe and fun place and love going there eventually

We drop DS off at Y child care and it was a struggle for a while, we started bringing a snack and a drink and creating a little drop off routine - we go in, hang up his coat set out the snack and he sits at the table. It has really helped the transition. We also let him bring his beloved teddy bear - it stays in his backpack, but I think knowing it is there helps him feel comfortable too.

Has this happened a whole bunch of times, or have you only tried it once or twice? Could be an adjustment period if it's a new thing, and maybe he'll be less freaked out after a few more visits.

I work and R is home with a nanny. He's 17m and they go to activities, playgrounds, library, etc. I also take the kids to music class and the YMCA so I can work out. When I do that, both of my boys go to the kid care together (older brother T is 4). T sort of watches over R and makes sure he's happy etc. It's very sweet.

I take T to swimming lessons there once a week. And I leave R at kid care because holding him in my lab at the edge of a pool doesn't work so well. He wants to get down and IN! The problem is that R is hysterical when I drop him at the kid care and then continues to be hysterical until the kid care worker finally has to bring him to me halfway through the lesson.

I've tried the Janet Lansbury approach at drop off. I'm fine with it if he cries a little at drop off. But what can I do to help him not be so upset during the 30 minute swim lesson so that he STAYS there and isn't hysterical!?
