Thanks all! I tried doing it myself yesterday, thinking she was distracted enough in the bathtub and I could just snip off the mini mullet she has going. I was wrong on both counts LOL I'll try to take her to another stylist and bring more distractions - I'm definitely not cut out (ha!) for doing this myself.

charlie got a haircut at 13 months and though he sat perfectly still in one of those car seats at a children's salon, they gave him the ultimate bowl cut.

i find that playing a video helps them keep still at that young age!

Ds needs a cut every three mths. His first haircut was at six months and he was desperately overduenm. The first few times we took him to dh's barber where he sat in one of our laps. Thr last cpl times I took him to a kiddie place at the mall. Now that he's older he tolerates it better and the tv and kid themed chairs etc help a ton. The stylist is really quick too. Sorry your stylist wasnt more friendly. She needs to get a new job!

I am too scared to cut my sons, but he has had 4 hair cuts at great clips (inexpensive chain where dh gets his hair cut) and he has had a different person every time and they have all been fabulous. He gets squirmy toward the end, but he's a toddler. They should be able to go with it. I hold lo in my lap and dh holds up a video on his phone. We are usually done in about 5-10 minutes.

@yin: Omg, I cut my son's hair as well. I have to cut it again this weekend and I am dreading it, do you have any recs for videos?
Basically what I do is cut it vertically, like I comb it between my fingers and snip from north to south. The hairline is where i struggle.

I cut LO's hair (well, just her bangs) at home. I do it after the bath when I'm brushing her hair anyway, and she's wrapped up in a towel so she can't squirm too much!! :silly:

I was shocked to realize that an upscale salon here is the go to place for toddler cuts. Maybe try calling around and ask if anyone does a lot of them. They have two stylists at any time who accept toddler clients and they are quick and awesome- and at $13 it's not much more than the cheapo place down the street. My guess is that they get better stylists to start with working there because women's cuts start at $50. Starting with someone who is already pretty good at cutting hair goes a long way.

Also, sort of gross since hair can get stuck to it but lollipops are a great bribe, especially when coupled with videos on your phone.

Good question! I took LO to a supposedly child-friendly place and while it was relatively inexpensive they didn't do a great job. For her last 2 cuts I have taken her to the same salon where I get my hair cut. Twice as expensive but they actually do a good job (and they have the boosters and kids' capes too). I dislike spending so much on her haircut though, so I'm keeping my ears open for other options.

I had such a difficult time with my LO that I ended up giving him haircuts at home. He would scream and cry every single time we went to get his hair cut. I've tried places aimed for young kids and normal hair salons. No luck. Most people don't listen to me when I tell them I want it super short either. I bought the nicest hair cutting scissors I could find on Amazon and watched a few tutorials online. Home haircuts have been a big success.

Where does one take a squirmy toddler for a hair cut? We tried Cartoon Cuts for LO's first cut a few months ago because it was kids themed and I figured the stylists would be kid friendly - baby did fine until the end, when she started squirming around, but the stylist just wasn't receptive to a kid at all, and we ended up with a hack job at the back of her head because the stylist wasn't willing to try with her. It may have just been the stylist we got, but it kind of soured me on the experience. LO inherited my fast growing, thick hair so she really could use another cut but I'm at a loss for where to take her.
