I did the rubber elastic bands until she started pulling them out and pulling a bunch of hair out with it. Then I just let it be even though it looks so annoying to have hair in her eyes all the time. It wasn’t worth the fight or the ripped out hair. Now sometimes she will tolerate it sometimes I can barely
Brush it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I save the fight for special occasions.

@JJ2626: My daughter hasn’t been successful in pulling out the rubber bands when they are placed in her hair tightly. She pulls out barrettes, bows, etc. but it takes too much precision and skill for her to handle rubber bands. She’s nearly 3 now and we started the rubber bands around 1.

@Shantuck: @Mrs. Turtle: are you worried she will pull them out and put them in her mouth? DD is 19 mos and I think she would try so hard to pull out a rubber band and if she did, I’d be scared she’d choke on it! Are they really that hard to pull out?

I feel your pain. My two year old picks out whatever I put in her hair, those tiny elastics included. If she doesn’t right away, she does as soon as she’s in her car seat (she can see herself in the mirror we have up). She has gorgeous, curly red hair but it’s for sure still at that weird length where it’s too short for a ponytail but also in her face all the time / tangly when ignored.

We usually just put whatever she picked out right back in, tell her her hair is so pretty, rinse repeat.

@Shantuck: I agree about goody. I have some cheaper ones that are easier to put in, but they sometimes break while looping or while she’s at school, so these sound great.

@bhbee: Yes. You'll have to loop around more times with the hair of really little children but I literally don't understand how people put in the goody ones because I can't even fit my finger through those. These would be great for a 7 year old. I've even used them myself once when I was on vacation and my hair tie broke.

@bhbee: Keep trying, they get used to it. I learned with our oldest, who is biracial and has coily hair that needs to be braided a lot to keep it healthy and untangled, that even one year olds can learn to tolerate gentle hair styling. I always do it in the high chair with a snack and a show once they're old enough for that to help.

@Mrs. Turtle: that is so cute! She doesn’t have that much on top yet but I’m experimenting with rubber bands - just not very good at it when she’s fighting me! Maybe I should try during meals

@Shantuck: I am going to order some - sounds like they would work for more hair also? (Like my 7yo’s braids)

@bhbee: We are right in that stage too. Our 16 month old has cute curls in back but the front is long and straight and hangs into her eyes. She pulls out clips, but will leave the little rubber bands alone because they hurt to pull out! I usually do two little ponies on top of her head with just the hair on top. Like this:

Same as other posters. I also resisted the urge to cut bangs and just struggled through the “Shetland Pony” stage. :silly:

@PinkElephant: That's exactly what we did at that age. We called DD "Bam Bam" because the hair shot straight up. A friend recommended these hair elastics because they are so much easier to put in than the goody ones (way more stretch): https://www.amazon.com/EAONE-Pieces-Clear-Elastic-Rubber/dp/B075QZQXQS/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=clear+hair+elastics&qid=1568668379&sr=8-3.

Can you just pull the front into a pebbles flintstone style ponytail using those little plastic elastics? They’re really hard to pull out 😛 If you want to try for a bow you can stick a clip through the band itself instead of her hair and it’ll be in there a little more.

You can also have others make a big fuss when she wears a bit about how nice it looks, my youngest always loved showing everybody her hair doodads if they’d compliment them. :)

My other girl was much better at leaving things in her hair. This one I can’t get away with anything! It’s at an awkward phase where it seems too short to do pigtails but it’s always in her face (longest pieces near the front) and any clips/headbands/etc get pulled out. If I do manage to distract her at first she pulls it out the second she sees it!

Maybe I just have to wait it out ... pro trips appreciated!
