My daughter did this too. We had to shelve it, and when we started again she took right to it!

@Cherrybee: what approach are you taking? We did Oh Crap! Potty Training.

It sounds like, from some of your posts, that E likes choices. I have a friend who, for the past 6 months or so, has asked her LO in the morning while getting dressed, if she wants diapers or underwear and has gone with what her LO requests. On days her LO picks underwear, she reminds her that means she has to use the potty and that she can ask for help if she needs it. Her LO has been pretty successful on the days where she picks underwear. Even on the days where her LO picks diapers, they use pull-ups, so she still has the option to try. I think they started this around 2.5, her LO has always been leaps and bounds ahead of my LO verbally, so I think that has helped too. She also mentioned that her LO was adamant about privacy very early in the process, so for them, making sure the set up in the bathroom was something her LO could navigate solo was important.

Just thought I'd share, I thought it was interesting!

@Smurfette: Yeah, she doesn't like it because she doesn't feel safe. You have to hold her to stop her falling in!

@Applesandbananas: Yes, we tried the little potty first. She hates both.

@JerricaBenton: @travelgirl1: She has a step stool but she cant bend her knees to reach it when she's on the trainer seat. If she was far enough forward to reach the stool, she would be on the seat bit and not over the hole!

@Mrs squirreld: Oh no, how frustrating!

Hmm. Maybe I will put it away (again) and try in a few weeks. She did it once, perfectly, a few weeks ago when her daycare friend potty trained but then they moved said friend to the big group and E refused to do it again. Potty training sucks.

I second the tall stool and sitting on it clothed ideas. Also, teach her to climb up onto it herself so she isn't being put onto the seat. That might feel better to her.

My toddler didn't like it either! And he's a little older than your LO I believe. At first he just wanted to sit on the potty with his diaper on. Fine by me! We are not rushing him let him do his own thing. When he's ready, he'll do it.

I would just try and be patient. Ours screamed at the mention of the potty after our first weekend of focusing on potty training was a bust. She hit all the readiness markers in the books, but she is strong/stubborn, and she just didn't want to yet. We waited (kept offering daily but didn't force it), and though it was another five months before she seemed amenable, it's going well now. We're a week in, so I can't say it's a done deal, but one day she just said okay, hopped up there and pooped. She's been in underwear since (when awake) with only a handful of accidents!

I agree with @pwnstar: we worked really hard to keep everything related to potty training very positive. So if she gets upset I wouldn't push it. Just tell her "that's ok, we'll try again another time". And ask her if she can tell you what she doesn't like about the potty and what might make her more comfortable and let her take the lead. She'll get there when she's ready, I promise!

I was going to suggest a step stool for her feet. Or, put her on the potty and put a TV show on. That worked for us! Bad habbit I know.

My only tip is to keep it as positive an experience as possible. No punishments/consequences for accidents or refusals to try. They all get there when they're ready.

Does she have a step-stool? Lo likes having a stool to rest her feet and also so she's in control of getting on and off.

@Cherrybee: my son is 2.5 and initially potty trained fairly quickly and we thought we'd nailed it. A few weeks in, he regressed and we've pushed through, but one of the antics we've been dealing with is him telling us he needs to go, then losing his ever loving MIND when we take him (particularly in public, which is the loveliest experience). So we bribe him. We tell him after he goes potty, we'll go watch Elmo or go get a Popsicle or go play with his race track, etc. and if that doesn't work, we remind him how he needs to keep his pants dry and if he doesn't, he loses something (sometimes it's Elmo, sometimes it's that we'll leave wherever we are, whatever works) and if he still doesn't go, we try again later. We follow through too, even if it means leaving the trampoline park after twenty minutes. I will say that LO stands to pee 99% of the time. I've heard some folks suggest having girls stand on the toilet seat and that the pee comes out in a straight shot (it was a recommendation for public bathrooms) so it might be something to think about, but I'm not sure if that's a habit you want to start!

Have you tried a little potty? Sometimes LO just wants the choice of a little potty vs a big potty, so we've kept his little potty out too. He will also ask that we potty at the same time occasionally, so that has been another tactic we've used.

Potty training sucks. Hang in there!

Have you tried her just sitting on the regular seat? My LO never liked the seat cushion. She just sits on it like we do.

DD (27 months) has been ready to potty train for weeks now. She talks about going to the toilet "like a big girl" and sometimes even asks to go but as soon as her bare bottom touches the seat she freaks and wants to get off. We have tried her on a plastic potty but she springs off it every time. So today we bought her a Peppa Pig cushioned toilet seat, which she was so excited to use (she kept saying "go on big toilet please") all the way home but as soon as I put her on it she tried to spring off - and then wailed "my legs are too small", wriggling and basically freaking out. She wouldn't try again.

I think that, perhaps, the problem is that she hates the feel of the cold hard plastic, and the cold leathery seat, on her bottom. I have HSP tendencies - perhaps she does too, in this area?

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any idea what the problem might be? Any tips?
