It gets better. It takes a long time, though. It got better when she was able to start getting into the car by herself...

Do you have a toddler music cd? I know it's kind of annoying because I would rather listen to decent music in the car, but my DS is happy as a clam if I put on a cd with kids music/nursery rhymes. He's never been a screamer or that unhappy in the car anyways, but if I don't have this cd on and it's a longer drive, he starts to fuss/cry a bit.

I agree with @littlejoy: about waiting on the FF as long as possible. I went through a rough carseat period with my now 20 month old when she was about 15 months. It lasted a couple of weeks and she finally got better about going into the seat again. I just limited car rides and tried novel car-only toys. I don't do food in the car either. Maybe see if your straps needs some adjustment now that LO is bigger to make the ride more comfortable?

I feel like FF isn't the best advice, from a safety standpoint, but you already know that it seems. There's a FB group called Car Seats for the Littles, and if you most this question there, you will surely get some ideas for making sure LO is content in the car. RF is so much safer ... I totally understand some people choose to FF around this age because their kiddos need it (car sickness, or screaming until they are sick), but I'd exhaust all options before going against the national guidelines. Best wishes. This is so hard.

We dealt with this too. Now at 20 months it has gotten quite a bit better; he still has occasional fits, but much less than when this phase first started. We didn't really do anything different, just had to wait it out. Sometimes music helps!

This has recently started happening to us as well. Honestly I'm considering switching him to FF (among other reasons!). I just haven't yet because I'm feeling a huge guilt about it not being as safe. :/

Our DD did the same thing and MIL suggested we front face the seat, after that she was pretty happy.

@LuLu Mom: She gets a drink, but again this only buys us a couple of minutes! I don't give her a snack because I'm super paranoid about her choking in the back and me not being able to pull over quick enough!

WE went through this, she would arch her back/refuse to buckle. And then she would UNbuckle, this is when we flipped her around. It was bout a month or two before her second birthday. To me at this point it was a safety issue because I could see her messing with the buckle better FF, it solved our problem. I know this isn't ideal. Does she get a drink in the car, or maybe a snack to keep her preoccupied?

So my LO is almost 17 months and up to about a month ago has always been good in the car...no fussing, just happy to chill out back there. But now within a couple of minutes she's whining and after 10-15 minutes she is full on crying. I've tried giving her books/toys etc. and that helps a little, but not much.

I'm not sure what else to do. Most of the time it's just me and LO so I can't get anyone else to sit back there. I really want to keep her rear facing until she's over 2 so I'm hoping this is something we're going to have to ride out (literally, haha!).
