@avivoca: yeah I think our first ride was a little too long for an almost two year olds attention span. I've also been reading about putting a folded towel behind her back so the helmet won't push her head so far forward and I will loosen the shoulder straps a little. Hopefully shorter trips and more comfortable sitting position will help.

@Foodnerd81: I don't have much advice. We do the same with H, we tell her she can't play with the bike without her helmet. We are gradually lengthening the time she wears it to get her used to it.

The good news is the local bike shop had a helmet that fit perfectly and they told me how to adjust it. She even liked t so much she wore in the stroller, then for over an hour at the park after. Good sign.

Only we took her out in the bike trailer today and at first she was good about keeping it on, then I think she got bored or tired of wearing it and she kept taking it off. I don't really think I can adjust the straps much tighter but she can still pull it off. We stop every time and show her how mommy and daddy are wearing our special hats but then she takes it off again a while later.

Any advice for that? DH had to ride back to the car alone while I waited with her on the side of the bike path.

I'd highly suggest going to a bike store and having them fit a helmet on your child. I did that and they were able to adjust the helmet to fit him correctly and recommend one that would be best for him.

@sarac: oh geez. Wow. And thanks- you are right that I should make sure it's a good fit! I'll go up to the local shop and hopefully they can provide more guidance. Maybe I'll even bring a Daniel tiger video so she will let us try a bunch on.

Yeah, you just need to keep trying them on until you find a brand and size that fits. With a child older than a year, you don't need a special flat backed helmet.

If you need a scary story, I have a friend who tipped their trailer over going around a turn. Kid hit their head, cracked the helmet, but was totally uninjured. Helmets in trailers are absolutely mandatory!

@avivoca: there is a bike shop and they have toddler helmets, but I thought this would be easier. I think you are right that going in there is the way to go even if they cost a little more. I had to bribe her with the iPhone just to let me put a helmet in her head at target, not sure how I'll get her to let the bike shop guys check it out!

I don't have advice about the trailer part, but I recently bought a helmet for Xander. It was a Schwinn helmet and I ended up getting the child size (ages 5-8) instead of the toddler size (2-5) based on some reviews I read that said they ran small. Xander's head size is about the 70th percentile and at almost 2.5, the larger sized helmet (meant for ages 5-8), fits him perfectly. It has a dial in the back to size down and up, so it's on the tightest setting, but fits him! So if you go with the Schwinn brand, size up.

Is there a bike shop in your area? I would recommend going there to get her helmet. They will have a lot more knowledge about how it should fit, how they adjust, etc. We got ours at a local bike shop and I feel much more confident about it rather than getting one at Target.

We are hoping to get out our new bike trailer for C this weekend, so I went to Target to try to get her a helmet. She is almost 2 but her head is 95%.

Two questions-
How do I know the size is right? The 1-3 year old one seemed too small, like it wouldn't go all the way down her big head. The next size was 3-5 and seemed awfully big? Now, she will be in a trailer so I feel like the risk of hitting her head is fairly minimal but I still want to be safe. How do I tell if it fits right?

2- with a trailer, vs a seat, do I need a flatter backed helmet or is a regular one going to be fine? Didn't occur to me until I was googling about the size and found some that are flatter in the back, but almost twice the price...

Thought?
