Just updating this for reference for future people....It's been a month and I think we are decently successful.

At the end of week 1, I thought it was a waste, I was so frustrated, his success was barely 50/50 and mainly he seemed to be just holding it for longer and longer.

Then, our regular babysitters (in-laws) came back, and they were fully on board. They really focused on 1-2 hour intervals and transitions - "We always go potty before the car" etc. Telling him when to go potty, instead of exclusively wanting him to tell us, worked much better. Also, they preferred to use pull-ups, and I don't think that screwed him up at all. He keeps his pull-ups dry almost always. He only has an accident maybe once every couple of days, usually when playing outside.

Pooping was more of an issue but within a month it has worked out. He has even pooped in public toilets a couple of times. What helped? We brought him to the bathroom if he had a poop accident, and while cleaning him up, we talked about how poop is supposed to go in the potty, not our undies. We also use a 2-step stool to prop his feet into a squatting position, give him a favorite book, and give him privacy - all tips from OCPT.

Knock on wood that the success continues!

Are you loading him up with liquids? I had this same problem with DS too. We had to get new and different things. Juice, popsicles, chocolate milk, etc. My mom told me I needed to go get orange soda, but I drew the line there :silly: .

The worst part of potty training for me was. Ring stuck inside for days.

Not sure how old but my then 2.5 year old held it for like six hours because she was nervous about the potty! Once she got it she got it though. It was like a mental block the first few days.

We still make her pee before leaving the house depending where we are going and she's 5.5!

Also I don't think four hours is that long. I think every four hours seems ok unless that's way out of the ordinary for him. I usually just change diapers at certain times except when it's poop so I'm not even sure how frequently my 2 year old pees.

My 3yo held it from 7:30-3 today because after his morning trip he wouldn’t go again until after preschool! I think he just has a lot of control. I wouldn’t worry as long as they stay dry! Good luck!!

I don’t have a ton of experience with this as were 1.5 months into potty training our 28 month old, but to me it sounds like it’s going well. My child also doesn’t like being told to try, but if it has been 2 hours then I usually make her or at least ask her. If nothing comes ou, no big deal and we move on and try not to make a big deal out of any of it.

I’m sure you know from ocpt that she talks about consolidating a bit and kids who are “camels”. Your kid could be one of those. But long periods of time with no accidents isn’t a big deal I don’t think and does point towards pee consolidation which is good for outings.

I also make my toddler “try for a pee” before we leave the house to go out. It’s something I do too so I just tell her that.

I also didn’t prompt her for the first week or do intervals aside from just randomly saying during the day “remember your pee and poo goes in the toilet/potty” or asking “where does your pee and poo go” and then that sort of served as a reminder. Now we will ask her if she needs to go and if she says no, we trust her. Unless we’re out for longer than 2 hours she usually doesn’t need to go, or course depending on liquid intake.

She just runs to the toilet when she needs to go. Sometimes she says something out loud and sometimes she doesn’t. Sometimes she thinks she has to poo and says she does, but then doesn’t. Although this signals that it’s in the works. She’s a bit more in tune with her body now so that doesn’t happen often.

I’d stick with it! Sounds like everything is going pretty well.

My youngest is a camel and usually goes 4+ hours without peeing! When we first potty trained him, he would hold it ALL DAY (8+ hours) at daycare and then rush to the potty as soon as we got home! When he was in a diaper, he used to pee more often, but now he only goes 2-3 times a day (plus in his overnight diaper).

I guess I wouldn't be too concerned as long as he's still getting plenty of fluids. If he starts refusing drinks because he's trying to avoid going pee, that might be an issue, but some kids can just hold it for a long time!

We are on day 3 of potty-training. Before this, he's been going on the potty 1-2x a day with prompting. I read an e-book about a 3-day method that was successful for my friends, and I read OCPT. Both books emphasized focusing on learning body signals / the "sensation" of having to go potty, rather than "trying" at timed intervals. We have been home for 3 days, talking about the potty a lot, watching potty song videos, drinking lots of fluids, lots of praise for a few times he has made it on the potty, etc. He has been wearing loose underwear or boxer briefs, naked doesn't work for us.

Day 1, he peed every hour, unprompted by us.
Day 2, he peed every 2 hours, unprompted by us.
Day 3 (today, this morning): he went 4 hours without peeing (7:30-11:30), aside from a LITTLE pee around 8:30.

Should I be concerned about this increasing pee interval, or is this normal and to be expected? He doesn't seem uncomfortable. Usually for 30 min before peeing, he will start grabbing his crotch. He doesn't want to stop playing. He doesn't like to be told to "try", and he will have a couple of false starts when we rush him to the potty and then nothing happens.

We remind him a ton to "tell us if you have to potty" and sing the "stop and go potty" song from Daniel Tiger. We tell him to "run run run" if he has to go potty.

I wonder if these long intervals will continue if we go out on errands / for fun things like park and library? I am dying to get out of the house.
