it's been rough in this household as well. after going in and trying to calm him down a few times (which has worked in the past), i just let him cry it out.

@tinyperson: that's just it- she's been a good night sleeper for a while so I know something is bothering her if she wakes up and screams. But after two hours of snuggles and nursing and everything I could think of and her not falling asleep, I had to try the CIO. I would have slept with her on me or whatever it took, but she couldn't sleep like that. On the plus side she slept in a little, we went to our play date, and I actually transferred her from car to crib- she woke up briefly, cried for a few minutes, and went back to sleep. Which means I don't have to spend nap time in the car. Hoping it's a long one.

Thanks for commiserating ladies! One molar is definitely all the way in- it's sort of crazy.

Just simply the worst. The best luck we've had was to sit by her crib and calm her down until she was lying down, calm, and wait for her to pass out, then sneak out. Each waking we'd sit further from her crib while waiting for her to fall asleep until we were sitting in the doorway. Many a night spent in her doorway... but in the end it was worth it. Good luck :( the disrupted teething toddler sleep is JUST. THE. WORST.

DS1 has done this a few times but I can't say it was teething related. A ride in the car put him back out. We only did that after an hour or two of no luck getting him to sleep.

We had nights like that when teething or sick. Usually we give motrin and go downstairs to the couch to watch some sports highlights or the aquarium channel until the meds kick in. Then she's usually sleepy enough to be put down in her crib.

For us, because she's typically a good sleeper, if she wakes up at night, I know something's wrong, so we just give her extra snuggles until she calms down (even if it takes an hour), then she's usually easy to put back down. She doesn't do CIO well at night anymore - she gets more worked up - so that doesn't work for us.

Hope the teething subsides soon!!

My LO has been doing this for the past 2 weeks and it's actually getting worse. We had such a nice period of STTN and now it hasn't happened again for a while. My LO is also waking up and REFUSING to go back down. We try everything...letting her cry, rocking her, cosleeping....like your daughter, she just goes nuts and assumes it's a party if she comes to our bed.

Today she was up from 4:10-6 am. Yesterday, it was 3:30-5:30. She is definitely *not* getting enough sleep overall, but there's nothing I can really do about that. She just won't sleep. =(

Molars are THE WORST. Glad she eventually fell asleep - when we have to leave LO to CIO, she's usually asleep within 15 mins too.

@Foodnerd81: This happened to us not too long ago (though not nearly as bad as you described!). M is getting her molars so I believe that was the culprit. We always do Motrin and it always helps.

@Kemma: we live in the city and up two flights of stairs so outside isn't really a great option, though I did think about it.

@illumina: after I did eventually just let her cry and she fell asleep (practically sitting up!) I did wonder if she would have done that two hours earlier. I just feel so bad letting her cry when she is teething or there is actually something bothering her, but the Motrin must have helped.

Thanks ladies. She did fall asleep after crying hard for about fifteen minutes. So tired today (me, not her). We were supposed to go to a play date half an hour away but I know she would fall asleep on the way home, and I'm worried about her nap being messed up... But I am fully acknowledging that her sleep still could be much worse.

This happens to us sometimes...usually if something disturbs her. We do one check right away and then leave her...she has to cry but it usually back asleep in ten minutes.

Hope you get some sleep soon

Oh man! I'm sorry. We had nights like that while my son was teething. He would just be up for hours on and off crying. Tylenol seemed to help. It sucks. Hang in there. Sorry I don't have any suggestions!

What do you do when your LO just will not fall asleep? It's 1:30 in the morning and I have just left a crying 14 month old in her crib in hopes that she will eventually pass out.

We have had it pretty easy here lately, but tonight, after going to sleep like usual around 7:30, she woke up at 10:30 and cried long enough that Dh went in to sooth her. Holding her standing up, she will rest her head on your chest and seem asleep, but put her in her crib and she freaks. We brought her into our bed and she crawled around like it was play time, even after I nursed her. I went into her room, pitch black, sound machine on, and nursed her laying on the bed in her room. She seemed so tired but couldn't get settled and was flipping around too much and I was afraid she would fall. After an HOUR of her trying to settle in the bed with me, I put her in the crib and the screaming started up again.

I don't really know what else to try. Fingers crossed but she may have fallen asleep in the crib, finally. Any tips for the next time??

Oh and she's definitely teething- first molar broke through this week, so I have her Motrin a couple hours ago.
