@regberadaisy: we have the little doggie knife too, but a serrated one. It's really good! Quite dull. They also use it for play dough and kinetic sand play.

We have one like the first one you posted, and I let LO use it with close supervision at 21 months. The only thing he has cut so far have been bananas and chicken nuggets, but he did great! It is sharp though, so he can only use it when I am helping him.

I let E have a regular butter knife at 21 months. She doesn't really get how to use it yet, but she's interested in it since we have them at the table

When did you start your toddler on a non plastic cutting instrument?
A friend bought this vegetable cutter for LO a while ago that works well as a toddler's first cutting instrument.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001XXCYC/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_5qzPub0TPC2PG
I let my 32m toddler used it for the first time last week and she did really great.

I plan to try this knife, reviewed by Sarah Crowder on the blog soon. When the Amazon price drops.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001UK3FAQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_4tzPub0T63SZK

Wondering if anyone has any tried favorites?
