I was also going to suggest a lovey (stuffed animal), white noise and nightlight.

DD was also lonely and once she got her giraffe (name Neigh) she was okay with going to sleep on her own. She also for some reason likes to "hide" by putting her pillow or blanket over her head. DD always sleeps with her white noise machine and she knows when its on its time to sleep.

@jhd: A book on CD might work. We do white noise right now but I think she needs to wean off of it. She does "read" to herself for about 30 minutes after we read to her and tuck her in. Thanks!

Mine was doing the same thing, and now she has a crib packed full of stuffed animals, books, and even some wooden toys, lol. Not only is she no longer lonely, she'll wake up and play for an hour before she wants to get up.

Would she listen to music or a book on CD or something or would that keep her awake?

@T.H.O.U.: that's a good idea, we may try that tonight. She does come out into the living room and ask what we are doing/watching.

I didn't think about the monitor- we don't typically use it anymore now that she's older, but will bust it out tonight just in case. Thanks!

For us, this usually means, "I know you're still out in the living room having fun and eating snacks".

What helps is to spend a few nights telling her she has to go to bed because you are going to bed too. Sneak into your room (fold laundry or watch tv or something). If she wakes, show her the empty dark living room/house and say, see its night time for everyone.

It also helped that we showed our older toddler how the monitor worked so she knew we were always close and could hear her.

@miramira: She could, but I'm not sure I want her to. Seems like she'd be in our bed pretty quick from the floor.

@hilsy85: She does have about 8,000 stuffed animals. I even give her something of mine to hold on to.

@Mamaof2: Isn't it just pitiful? Maybe I'll try the "friend" route- we have pointed out stuffed animals but haven't called them friends yet.

My DD is a little older but lately she has been telling me this too - with tears in her eyes.

I tell her that she isn't alone - then I show her all the the "friends" in her bed - Rapunzel, unicorn, baby, etc.

"See, your not alone"

My 2.5 year old has been saying she's lonely in her room at night, and it takes FOREVER to get her to sleep. She cries and pouts and I feel so bad for her, but I know better than to start laying down with her to get her to go to bed.

We've tried letting her fall asleep in our room (while we aren't in there) and that helped for a few days, but she's lonely in there now too. She even woke in the middle of the night saying she is lonely and my husband had to sleep in her bed with her until morning.

Has anyone ever dealt with a lonely toddler at bedtime? Help! I makes me so sad that she's lonely (I hate falling asleep alone too), but don't want her in bed with us as I'm pregnant and the baby will have to be in our room.
