I think it might be a regression/developmental thing, and that nightmares could be a part of it. We had some issues around 19.5 months that lasted for a week or so and I do think it had something to do with nightmares. She seemed terrified, and was afraid of going to bed at night which she never had been before, and when she'd scream in the middle of the night she'd calm down immediately when we picked her up but then lose her shit the second we put her back in the crib. To me that indicated nightmares. We talked her through it a lot, explaining to her before bed that it's okay to be scared and that we're always there for her and validating her feelings and so on. It did stop happening after a couple of weeks like that and sleep is back to normal.

@Astro Bee: I think nightmares are a real possibility too. We only had those once or twice. Change definitely makes sleep a bit worse at our house.

@brownepiano: Hmmm, maybe they aren't night terrors. Or is it possible that he wakes up from them on his own, and is still freaked out? Do toddlers have nightmares? Something is upsetting him, and I don't know what. It's not every night, and it's not the exact same time when it happens.

@sapphire: He does sometimes cry out in his sleep, but then rolls over and goes back to sleep on his own. This is entirely different. They aren't normal cries, they are high pitched screams. It's heart-breaking. :crying: I wish I knew what was causing it, and how we could help him. If he wasn't so tall and strong we would have left him in the crib longer, but he's been able to climb out for months, and I wasn't comfortable with our temporary pillow solution on the floor.

We did have night terrors around that time but they are not like you are describing. He'd start screaming and when we went in and turned the light on he didn't stop. He'd just kept writhing in bed and screaming no matter how much we held him, rubbed his back, or talked to him. Night terrors they aren't awake and they often won't wake up, they'll just eventually settle again. It is really freaky.

My LO is around the same age and cries out in her sleep sometimes. We don't go in unless it lasts more than a couple minutes because she usually goes back to sleep. Otherwise I can usually just tell her it's ok, give her a little pat and tuck her back in and she goes back to sleep. She's in a crib still though. You might try putting him back in bed faster - he might only need a minute of soothing, not to be actually put back to sleep fully. Spending that much time with him might reinforce the getting out of bed to get you to come hang out with him.

@travellingbee: ugh, that sounds awful. I understand what you mean about awake but not. He's awake (I think) but still screaming and often gets out of his bed. When we go in, he heads straight to the rocker and stops crying. He usually soothes and falls asleep fairly quickly. But he squirms around and it's not deep sleep, so we wait a half hour or so before setting him down again. Which really interrupts our sleep.

My LO has gone through a few phases with night terrors. Is he soothed by you? Ours would continue to freak out and call for us with us right there. He seemed awake but not conscious ( which I realize makes no sense...)

DS is 20 months and has recently started waking up in the middle of the night screaming. Is this what they mean by night terrors, and if so, did your LO experience them around this age?

We converted his crib to a toddler bed a few weeks ago, and it took a week for him to get used to it. I'm not sure that this would still be contributing to his troubled sleep? Is it possible he feels less safe?

Other milestones/changes lately are: he just this week started stringing 2-3 word sentences together, and he doesn't want to nap on the weekends (unless we are in the car). Weekday naps at daycare are 2 hours long, however. He's also been going to sleep later at night, close to 8, instead of 6:30 that he did for almost a year.

Sleep is sucking for everyone right now, and I'm 20 weeks pregnant and really need my sleep! Can anyone offer advice, or at least commiseration that this will pass?
