@Freckles: Who knew that being attentive to your child can have drawbacks?
@MrsMccarthy: aaw, thanks for your kind words. He just started being chattier recently. It's nice to see him open up to people more.

@stargal: sounds very normal to me! My LO didn't have very many words at that point. She only had a handful , and at her 18 month appt, I was freaking out because she only had about 15 words. Our ped told us not to worry - it was clear that LO understood so much of what we said. She's 20 months now and just this past month, her vocab is really starting to pick up. She's at 30 words now, and I swear is learning at least 2-3 new words a day. She's also starting to string together two words and copies everything we say :) So don't worry - just keep talking to him as much as you can and he's gonna start picking up a lot more words soon! :)

Yep normal. T probably had 5 words at 15 months, maybe 8 by 16 months and now at 17 1/2 months he's got about 25 (but like 10 in the past few weeks - not sure if we are at the "explostion" point yet, but probably close). He started slow but is picking up his pace as we get closer to 18 months. He's always been a babbler too!

I believe the standard is about five words by 18 months, and stringing simple sentences together by 24 months. I would not worry, especially if his other cognitive and social skills are up to par. I'd be willing to bet you'll notice an explosion soon!

He is so beautiful with so much soul in his eyes and he always looks so happy. banana sent me some really good language encouragement tips that I will copy and paste to your wall as well. Some of them I was already doing but others I was not. our boys are perfect but ya know its our job as their mom to worry about them all the time. Hahah

That's exactly where we were at around the same age. I think we are at the beginning of the word explosion now, he's starting to pick up a word or two a day now at almost 22 months, for the past couple months it was one word a week or so.

thanks everyone for sharing your expierences!!!! I really appreciate it. :) It calmed me down a lot!! I alwys tend to worry about P and just want to make sure that I am not hindering him in anyway that If he needs the extra help its there for him as soon as possible.
my gut is telling me to wiat it out. we went through something similar with him with physical milestones and he did everything on his own timeline (in the realms of normal just on the later end)
@MrsMccarthy: thanks for those links, im gonna check them out. I agree early intervention is so so important. :) I just want to make sure im not hindering him in anyway with not taking any action. and ps, when I saw your sweet boy walking and crawling I was so amazed, he was so so young! Ahh I just love your T! he seems like the sweetest little boy!

Jake will be 17 months next week and only consistently says 'mamamamama' 'dada' and 'dah'(dog). He does sign 'more, please' and understands direction. As @MrsMccarthy: said, he doesn't 'want' for much...he seems to be okay so I try not to worry much since kids are SO different.

LO is about 15.5 months old and she barely says any actual words. She says mama, dada, and yeah. She babbles a ton though and she recently started communicating by pointing and shaking her head.

I asked at her appointment if this was okay since some kids I know say a lot more words by 12 months than she has now. Her doctor looked at her chart and said that she's just been a motor skills kind of a kid and that one day she will probably have an explosion of words. He didn't seem concerned yet though and your LO seems ahead of mine (my LO also doesn't wave yet and was a very late pointer/clapper).

Sounds normal to me. DS was never much of a babbler, at about 19-20 mos his speech suddenly took off and he was repeating everything and making it clear that he had been listening the whole time. :) I wouldn't worry about it.

@BoogieBea: @Freckles: we are also guilty of not allowing T to need things enough. I am sort of a helicopter momma and I realizing that I need to back off and listen a bit more although sometimes it does elevate to a tantrum if we make him wait or ask and he feel desperate (especially if its milk he wants).

P.s I met Boogiebea's four year old son and he was so adorable and chatty! He just wanted to chat with me about Kung fu panda during our whole meet up so clearly a few delays aren't an indication that you won't have a chatty little man on your hands.

My son had very few words at that age and babbled a LOT for a long time. I probably should have had him accessed, but he eventually caught up- at his preschool screening, the speech therapist was really impressed and actually marked him as advanced in his verbal skills and vocabulary.

@BoogieBea: We did that too! Instead of forcing LO to ask for something, i would just know what she wanted and give it to her before she started whining. Our pediatrician gave us some tips on forcing her to give an answer and it's hard, but slowly working.

As you know i have expressed similar concerns with T. He babbles a ton and says words but not as many or as purposeful as some of his playmates. He was always ahead on physical stuff. He gestures a bit and i have noticed he is becoming better at that but he is more about bringing us things than pointing. he will sometimes point with his whole hand and grunt or say Mama when he wants something. Sometimes he answers to his name and other times it seems like he is deaf or full on ignoring. He engages with eye contact and plays a lot though. He is 14 months old next month. My feeling is this: he sounds like he is progressing BUT it can't hurt to work on some things with him if you think delays or some sort of mild processing disorder are going on. In our case i have decided not to have him formally evaluated till around 18-20 months because most of what i have read has said that's when it starts to becoming more clear BUT i also do not think it can hurt to check out some books from the library and work on some therapies with him yourself now. If he is just fine then they wont harm him at all. And if there is an issue, since early intervention is SO critical in helping the outcome, you will do him a lot of favors. I checked out the the following youtube channels:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epvsvK8HmXQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg7iqrPnOnk&list=PL974783FDD2EE10F6&index=22

Again to me it sounds like P is very much in a gray area. I do not like to use the term normal but he definitely seems like he could just be a late bloomer as does Tor. The more i do these things and read the more encouraged i am. But it can't hurt to do things to work on language and communication with him and then pick an age when you feel like he will be evaluated if you still have concerns. I hear SO MANY stories of kids, especially boys, speaking very little or very late and turning out perfectly fine little communicators later. Sending hugs to you and P and if you EVER want to chat about it with someone who understands feel free to wall me. xoxoxo

My son wasn't saying many words at that age. In fact, he wasn't saying much even at 2. We did end up starting him on EI after turning 2. Turns out that he just had a natural delay in speech. He is our first child and we were really eager to address his needs even though he wasn't properly asking so that didn't help much. Narrate everything you do - that helps him put words to actions.

DS is 17 months and only consistently says mom, dad and cat. He does a lot of grunting/whining/pointing but is very good at verbal understanding. I figure all children develop differently and am not concerned quite yet. It's frustrating to know what he wants - ask him to say it (milk for eg) and instead he just nods. He does babble. My dr said some just take longer. I am very aware of the 'delay' though.

@stargal: meh, totally normal!!!!!!! :) Have you had your 15 month appt yet? We had ours and the ped said, "Is she babbling?" And with my yes, she was happy. Kids are so different. My daughter is the same as yours, very few words and she doesn't use them that often, either. I try to remind myself that she is smart, she knows stuff. Like, if we tell her to get her shoes, she can do that. She just doesn't verbalize yet. There's nothing wrong with her. :)

I know how hard it is to hear about other kids her age or younger who are talking way more than her. I was at a friends house last weekend and her daughter kept saying different words, her mom told me she has at least 15 and she's 13 months!!!! M was running circles around her (the 13mo old is not walking or crawling yet) but wouldn't say a word to her. They're all so different!!

I'm not sure how normal this is, but it doesn't hurt to have him evaluated for Early Intervention if you're concerned. When DS had his overall evaluation (12 months), they said he had some delay and gave me ideas to help encourage talking even though we're not doing speech therapy. I know another mom whose 2 year old is in speech therapy.
