We have it. We explained that she could come out when the light turns green. However, the little stinker kept pointing out that it was lit up (because of the back light on the clock) so she said she could get up.

It has worked really well for us. It by no means keeps him in bed, but it is a way to help teach him the difference between morning and nighttime. Without it, he has no frame of reference when he wakes during the night for whether it is time to get up or not. It isn't perfect, but I really like it. We have the stoplight one. I do wish ours had an "its almost time" setting. Ours stays red until the designated time, but if he wakes 15 minutes before it is really hard for him sometimes.

@hellobeeboston: We have the clock pictured in the original post and it's yellow when they need to stay in bed and turns green when they can get up. You can adjust the setting for the yellow to last however long you want. So for us, it goes off after like an hour and is off until his wake up time when it turns green. You can also adjust the brightness some.

It was an absolute disaster for my (then) 3 year old. She really wanted to follow the rules and stay in her bed if it was green, but she was waking in the night anyway and freaking out because she wasn't supposed to come upstairs and crawl into bed with us. It culminated in her waking up and throwing the saddest fit in the living room. My husband tried to go get her and bring her to bed with us and she just cried and cried and fought him because she really wanted to follow the rules but it was night and she was awake and freaked out. It totally broke my heart. I threw the damn thing out the next morning.

DS is 22 months, and we've had one of these since about 18 months. He's still in a cot so we don't have the issue of him getting out, but I'd say about 80% of the time he waits quietly until it turns yellow and then he calls for us. I put some books in the cot with him so he's not just sitting there! Recently I've seen him start to sometimes lay back down and try to sleep when he sees its still blue which is progress!

I think it helps them differentiate day from night. e stays quietly in her room the vast majority of the time until it turns yellow. My only complaint is that she still thinks it's a toy and gets it down and messed for its it, sometimes setting it off, turning the volume off, etc. it's losing its novelty and she seems to accept that bedtime is ruled by the clock, not her mean parents, which is nice. We ALWAYS get her when it's yellow, so she's patient. We've had it since end of July

It works well for us. We know if she calls out that something is a miss, usually it is potty related. We don't set it for naps but she thinks she has to stay in her bed until it turns green too. So now we have to check the monitor towards the end of nap. We left her in her room for almost 4 hours once because we forgot about that (oops).

Oh I also will add it's helped him learn the concept of time and that bedtime and morning are set times for him. He's become really interested in, and understanding of time in general as a result. And though we have the digital clock, it's helped him learn to read time too.

We really appreciate it. The clock itself works great! whether or not your child will respond positively to it is another story :) he gets that when it turns green, he's allowed to get up. Does that always stop him? No, it doesn't. But has it helped him understand that we all need sleep and he needs to stay quiet and stay in his bed until morning? Yes, it has. Some mornings he'll run into our room and excitedly announce, "my clock turned green! It's morning!" Other days, I can sometimes convince him to go back and stay in bed because the clock isn't green.

We have been using a Tot Clock since she was 2.5 and it works brilliantly! DD's wake time is set to 8:15, and honestly, I have absolutely no idea what time she really wakes up as she never (and I mean NEVER) comes out of her room until her clock is yellow (yellow on our clock means wake up time). She also can hear the lullaby music on her clock start at bedtime and if she's playing somewhere else, she'll stop what she's doing and say 'sleepy time' - it doesn't mean she falls asleep straightaway but at least she knows it is get ready for bed time. It also works well for keeping her in her room during nap time, even if she doesn't actually go to sleep.

We got it about 6 months ago and at first, it worked great (pre 2.5) but then with a lot of travel, schedule change, etc, it stopped being effective. Then we got serious about her staying in her room, so we got a door monkey, coupled with strong reminders of not getting up until the sun was up and now she stays in bed/waits by the door until 7 when the sun comes up. After that, she will start to holler for me, or get out of bed. I think previously, she just got up whenever, but now she sees that the sun is not up and puts her head back down, sometimes falling asleep again. It's great.
