We're going through the exact dilemma right now, I'm leaning more towards buying a twin bed that will fit in the room that already has a twin bunk bed in it. She's 19 months and I want to make the switch before this baby gets here in August, that way we don't have to buy another crib.
We have a toddler bed in the garage from when my step-daughter was little, her Mom gave it to us when she moved her into a bunk bed and we used it for maybe 4 months before moving her into a twin. It's going on craigslist & the local facebook resale page soon.

My actual plan is to give C our queen mattress and frame, and move his twin bed into M's room and buy a new mattress for us. Then we just have to buy a rail.

and here's a pic from last night.... DH fell asleep in DD's twin bed while doing her bedtime routine, haha... it's nice to be able to read and snuggle in a twin-sized bed that fits both you and the LO!

We transitioned DD at 22-months to a twin bed too! Here's my post on it - http://www.hellobee.com/2012/11/21/transitioning-a-22-month-old-from-crib-to-twin-bed/ - the comments might be helpful too to give you an idea on others' experiences. Seems like most ppl have a pretty smooth transition though!

Definitely go for the twin with rail. A toddler bed is too small and will not fit your LO for a long time. You can just save the crib for your next LO.

I would say twin for sure. All of my friends who have bought toddler beds regretted it. Even my friends who had convertible cribs all ended up buying another twin or full eventually. My son has a full-sized bed and he loves it. We also use it as our guest bed for when our moms stay over.

@artbee: Then I'd go with whatever sized bed fits the big kid room, be it twin or full.

@looch: It does convert but we're hoping to save it for baby #2 whenever that happens so we're going to keep the crib as is and just buy a new bed for LO.

Does your crib convert to a toddler bed? What are the plans for the big girl bed?

If your crib doesn't convert, then I'd just do a big kid bed. twin or full.

If your crib converts, you have nothing to lose with the toddler bed, if it doesn't work and you have the space, you can do the full sized bed.

At 22 months LO decided to start climbing out of her crib. Time for a new bed! I'm thinking we'll go straight to twin with a rail, but I just wanted to hear experienced parent's opinions on it first.
