ugh poor thing! I've been guilty of doing this myself lately, too. but then it KILLS after (raw skin) so I'm trying to just stick to keeping my lip balm on me.

I may give my 2 year old DD her own chapstick, but I'm afraid it may end up everywhere..lol.

I have had chapped lips and picked at them ever since I can remember. I can still remember my mom telling me to stop picking them. It's not a compulsive thing. It's because they are super chapped and slivers of skin stick out, sometimes they are really sharp! I even asked the Dr. if there's a prescription lip balm for chapped lips and there isn't one. I don't think there's much you can besides offer lip balm. Would you want to walk around with dead skin flapping on your lips? I wouldn't.

@Mrs. Bee: Yes, if I do this I get a mega-scolding from my husband. His sister does it all the time and my husband constantly yells at her and blames her for setting the bad example.

@T.H.O.U.: I have tried coconut oil. I don't know. Maybe I'd be better off sticking with one thing. I don't want it to taste or smell too good though.

I've been thinking about coconut oil at night to try to help. Maybe even melting in some beeswax to really make it thick and stick

Part of our problem is she's congested so she breaths through her mouth at night and wakes up really chapped.

My LO has been doing this too, and what’s worked best for us is getting LO her own "special" chapstick – my MIL bought her some godawful purple pixie-stick flavored lip balm, and since purple is LO’s favorite color she is ALL ABOUT IT and puts on her chapstick now whenever her lips feel “crunchy”.

Also, aquaphor at night has helped as well, as I’ve just gotten into the habit of putting my lip balm on her every time I put it on myself. Oh, one more thought: in the bath, I gently rub her lips with a washcloth to get rid of dead skin layers, and then slather her up with aquaphor.

olive does this too, but her lips are so chapped that slivers of skin stick out. i can't fault her... i have the most chapped lips ever and am constantly peeling my lips otherwise i'd have slivers of skin sticking out!

i've been applying aquaphor at night and it's helped a bit.

My DS does this too - I use chapstick at night so it looks better by morning but then he starts picking at it again.

No cue how to stop it!

I find that slathering on lanolin at night really helps.

My 2 year old constantly peels her lips (pulls off the chapped pieces) and now they're a red mess. They're not even chapped right now, they're smooth and bright, bright red. I have tried different lip balms and now and trying Carmex, even though it says it's for age 3 and up. I don't know if the problem is more her skin or this compulsive behavior. We correct her when we see her do it but it doesn't seem to help. Anyone have experience or ideas??
