Once you are ready to graduate from the place mats with the lip, we have had great luck with the Chilewich place mats from Crate and Barrel. We used them since before our kids were 2 and they love that they are the same as ours, but they are super easy to wipe up and are incredibly durable. Ours are over 5 years old and look brand new!

@abmamma: there's a brand new one out that was just on Kickstarter--they reached their goal, so now I think the public can get them.

It's the Less Mess Happy Matt. It suctions to the table, you can serve liquids in it (because it has a good size lip) and it's made out of food grade silicone. I can't link to it because I'm at worked, but here's a link to a link. http://www.betterlivingthroughdesign.com/accessories/less-mess-happy-mat/

DD just turned 2 and is really into sitting at the table with DH and I during meals now. The last few days I've been using one of our regular fabric placemats at the table for her and it's been ok but it would be nice to get her something more washable for the inevitable mess that is to come. In my perfect world, we'd be able to get the Stokke Table Top, but no way am I spending $90 on a placemat!! So I'm looking for alternatives-- I'd like something on the larger side with a lip to contain spills/messes that is easy to clean (and that we could potentially use for art/craft projects too). Any suggestions?

I did see the Smarty Parents Kiddy Platter which seems similar in concept to the STT-- anyone have any experience with that?
