My strategy is to buy more expensive/sturdier shoes a size up, and cheaper shoes like sneakers I buy in the rights size. My son has already trashed the sneakers I bought him 2 months ago. However, last year I bought nice rain boots and Sorels for winter one size up and he still fits in both of them this year. He's almost 4 though, so I don't think he has trouble walking in shoes as much as a younger toddler.

I think it just depends on if they can walk in them a little big. I bought my daughter a pair of rain boots that were a little big and she could barely walk in them. My husband and I joked we were going to make her wear them all the time just to slow her down and give us a break:) But I just bought her some Uggs in a 7, bc there are no half sizes and she's a 6 or 6.5 now, and she walks perfect in them even though they are a little big.

Other than that, I don't think there are any negative effects from wearing shoes a little big. As long as they don't wipe out constantly:)

I always buy shoes a whole size big, but then again we live in the north and she always has on piles of outdoor clothes, plus she wears thick socks. I've read that shoes for toddlers are supposed to be at least a half size big.

But during the summer, her shoes fit true to size.

I'd put thicker socks on too. The thing i hate about putting her in too big shoes is that she tends to trip/fall.

I don't know but I'm thinking I'm going to do the same. Maybe put thicker socks in the beginning?

I used to buy shoes in half sizes for my LO (5, 5.5, 6) but shes outgrowing shoes so quickly that I quit doing that and started moving in whole sizes instead. It means the shoes are a little big on her in the beginning but she gets at least 2 more months of wear out of them. Wondering if there are any drawbacks to putting her in slightly too big shoes?
