I don't have a baby gate and not planning to get one :-( Had I knew that this day would come, I would have bought it when I needed it when he was 5 months old!! :(

My LO went through the crying/screaming when I left her at bedtime right around 18 months. I know Mrs. Pen also went thorough this. I'm pretty sure ours was related to separation anxiety. It lasted for several weeks...and then it stopped and she's back to her happy self at bedtime. We took her crib rail off at around 20 months and she does fine...she never tried to climb out of her crib but my husband wanted to try it before any climbing incidents and at 21 months so far so good.

@T-Mom: @irene: I used this gate:

http://www.amazon.com/North-States-Superyard-Play-Panel/dp/B00020L78M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376600665&sr=8-2&keywords=north+states+play+yard

The way we were able to make it less flimsy was to wrap the gate all around the bed, then push the bed up against a corner so that only 2 sides are exposed (foot of the bed and one side). It made it a lot sturdier. If you push on it, it will bend a little (because the plastic isn't the sturdiest). But we found that this "bend" actually deterred my son from climbing on it. I guess he felt it was unsteady? He tried the first couple of times and when he felt it bend, he looked a little surprised and didn't try it after that. @chopsuey did the same set up (floor mattress and the north states gate). I think she said it worked pretty well for her daughter, too.

The one that @t-mom has looks like a sturdier plastic so I'm sure that one would work well (won't bend?)

My son slept on that thing until he was 2 1/2. We eventually bought him a bed frame and we put that same mattress on it (with a bed rail) and he slept like a rock. I guess he couldn't really tell the difference. It was a really easy transition for us.

@irene: I have two sets of this baby gate: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008CMQTZI/ref=aw_1st_sims_1?pi=SL500_SS115

That's what I was thinking of putting around the mattress since I already have it.

@banana: @irene: I had this thought too, to put a gate up around it. I might try that first before the lock. I have a really sturdy baby play gate that would probably be pretty resistant to toddler pushing!

@banana: How do you set up a gate around a floor bed that is strong enough for a toddler to lean and kick on it? For mine he'd push it down and make a huge mess and hurt himself. Tips please!

@irene: We had a floor bed since he was 18 months. We put up a gate around it so he didn't roll off of the mattress. In a few months, we're going to do the same set up for my daughter (floor bed with gate around it). It made the transition to a "real" bed soooo much easier because it was sort of an inbetween step. Crib, to floor bed with gate, to real bed with rail.

Thanks for sharing everyone! Now I am really dreading it!!

Inspired by Mrs. Lion's recent post (http://www.hellobee.com/2013/08/14/our-montessori-inspired-nursery-makeover/), I am contemplating that I should get rid of the crib the next chance that my work is slower (and can stay up 24/7, haha), and see how it goes...... With my luck, I have a feeling it will end badly regardless.

I will check out the lock, but I am very reluctant about it. And of course, when it comes to that hairy point, I'd have no problem locking LO in his room. haha.

I was also worried about the toddler bed switch because LO is happy at night, but she will more often then not stay up and play a little bit in her bed, and she used to do this in her crib. I was sure she would get out of her crib and play for hours with her toys. But she doesn't leave her bed until I go into her room. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining!

@irene: my DS is doing the same thing right now. He cries every single day for maybe 15 seconds max. And then he puts himself to sleep. He is 23 months and in the crib. He has only tried to climb out once. We are going to put him on a floor mattress when he's 2 (so, soon). I'm not sure what's going to happen. With my DD, we did the exact same thing, and we ended up laying down next to her (best to avoid this, as Mr.Bee said) and the pattern continued for a long time (we only recently stopped laying down next to her and DD is almost 5). So I'll probably be getting a door lock like @mrbee: posted about!

LO is 18 month old and I am curious if this is happening to you.

He's been "difficult" during bedtime now for months. I shouldn't say "difficult" but I don't have a better word for it. So at bedtime, I'll ask him to pick several books, and we'll read it together before bedtime. After we finish the stories it should be bedtime, and I'll tell him it is bedtime now, good night (well, maybe I don't really have consistent language, but somewhere along that line). I'll walk out, and he knows I am leaving, so he'd stand up and scream and cry! I can't really stay and calm him or he won't go to sleep. However, once I leave the room, he'd cry for maybe 1 minute and falls asleep within 5 minutes.

We don't really have a "problem" as of now, but I am a bit worried about when he can climb out of his crib in a few months, and we have to take down the rail (or do the floor mattress Montessori style). I just don't know what would happen - would he cry and chase after me and won't go to sleep, and I'll have to do what "Super Nanny" (TV show) does, and have to repeatedly carry him back to his bed and tell him to go to sleep, and repeat this for hours?

Did this happen to you and did you have a solution to that? Advice needed!
