We went through this with DD#1. DH usually ended up sleeping on her floor, next to her crib. She would go to bed at 7 but not sleep until 8:30/9:00. Then she would wake up screaming or crying around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. She would be awake for the day at 6. This went on and off for almost a year. It was awful. Then it just stopped. She's 2.5 now.

Can your DH try putting your LO down? My 19 mos old became hysterical when I tried to leave his room about 4-6 weeks ago. I didn't have any problems before that for naps/bedtime. He would only calm down if I held him and wouldn't go to sleep even though he was tired. It became too much because I can't stand him crying/screaming so I made my DH take over LO's bedtime duties. LO goes to sleep just fine for DH. I struggle everyday putting him down for a nap.

@buffalove: ok, I am so going to try this tonight! Thank you for the tips! It sounds like it might take longer than CIO or controlled crying, but those methods just aren't working right now with my strong willed toddler. I am def going to give this a shot and see how she does. I also think the verbalizing part will help as well...she is really starting to talk a lot and understand exactly what I am saying.

@BabyBoecksMom: hmmm interesting....yea I was wondering if perhaps her sleep needs have dropped or if this is just a weird regression/phase. I hope it's just a phase, but who knows!

@scg00387: wow that's awesome! I hope we come out of this soon too! I just feel terrible for her on her daycare days, as I am sure she is just exhausted. I am going to try for a later-ish bedtime, maybe 8-8:30 too. When we were visiting my family she went to bed later and was waking up in the 6am range, but at least she wasn't fighting bedtime tooooo much.

@abmamma: yeppp that's exactly what we are going through too! I see no signs of her 2 year molars, so I'm thinking its some sort of developmental thing going on or her sleep needs have changed....either way, hopefully it's a short phase for both of us!

We had very similar problems around the same age - started right before a vacation, and continued for a couple weeks when we got home.

My LO would have loved it if I rocked him, but instead I got him to lay down in the crib and rubbed his back until he fell asleep. Then I'd slooooowly sneak out of the room. Did this routine for about a week. Then I shorted the back rub time to less than 5 minutes, but still stayed standing next to the crib until he fell asleep. Did this for another few days. Then I started backing away from the crib a little bit at a time, and if LO would pick his head up and look at me, I'd reassure him that I was right here, and shush him back down. This worked! Finally, I also started verbalizing what was gonna go down during our bedtime routine "first we take a bath. then we brush teeth. then we get jammies on. then we have some milk. then mommy is going to rub your back for a couple minutes, but mommy has to leave to go to bed in mommy's bed, so no crying when mommy leaves. mommy's right next door in her bed." LO was in the midst of a language explosion, and I think the verbalized routine part really helped!

Good luck. it SUCKS to go through!!!

Our 22 month old has been having similar problems recently! We used to put her down at 7:30 and she'd be out by 8 and sleep until 7ish but lately it's been 8:30 or 9:00 before she's fallen asleep and has mornings where she is awake at 5:30 or 6! She also seems to have a burst of energy right before bed all of a sudden-- we haven't changed her routine at all. I was thinking (hoping) it might be related to the 2 year old molars but am wondering if it is a developmental thing now based on what everyone else is saying. I can't decide if I am comforted that others are going through this too or scared that this will potentially be a longer phase than I was expecting! :P

@NovBaby1112: if usually takes him about 30 minutes. Knock on wood the last few days have been better; he's been in bed around 8 and waking around 8:30. He has been squawking around 4:30/5, yesterday I pulled him into bed with me and today he squawked and put himself back to sleep. So we adjusted bedtime later and are trying to force the sleeping in part instead!

I think that was around the time that W started pushing back her bedtime. She used to go to sleep by no later than 7, but then it was 7:30, then 8! And she went from sleeping in until 8am, to 6:15 - Ugh!

We tried everything to get her to get more sleep, but, even though she still seems tired, this is her new schedule. :-(

@scg00387: interesting....how long does it take him to fall asleep? last night I tried bedtime at 6:45 bc she was exhausted, and she didn't fall asleep until 8ish. then woke up at 5am! ugh....not enough sleep for her. I am home with her today so she just went down for a morning nap, which she hasn't taken in months!

@Beebug: oh man, 2 months? and you have a little newborn too!! you poor thing....is she also fighting bedtime and waking early? what are you doing in the meantime? CIO just isn't working for us at this age....

@travelgirl1: I'm a big sucker too...It's SO hard listening to your toddler scream and cry. Hopefully there's a light at the end of the tunnel soon!! I don't know how you've gone on so long, I am exhausted and its only been a week!

We went through a weird sleep patch recently too, right around 19 months. She had gone down really easily for a really long time and then for 2 weeks she would cry and we would have to go in and sit with her cradled in or arms until she fell asleep. She would cry out in the middle of the night and she would wake up really early (before 6am). We did a little CIO but it only worked after we had been going in and out of her room to soothe her, and there was nothing else we could do but leave her. But, it passed! She is back to normal now. I think it was a regression....She started stringing words together after that, so maybe her brain was in over drive.

Eta: I don't have much advice except that this too will pass!

@NovBaby1112: Right now I lie with her (for every nap and night time, I am a huge sucker, lol) to get her to sleep. It can take an hour plus. We lie on my bed and then once she's asleep I give her 20 minutes or so to settle properly than transfer her into her crib.

@hilsy85: the only way she calms down is if I rock her...if I try just putting her in crib and laying next to it or sitting in chair, she gets hysterical and screams rock a bye! rock a bye! lol...I was determined to just let her CIO tonight because her sleep is suffering so badly, but now that she climbed out, I am not sure what to do.....maybe transition to floor bed and sleep with her? Gahhh

@travelgirl1: I know, right!? Sleep is the best thing ever! Man, that sounds tough....so what do you do right now to get her to go to sleep? I am thinking about putting her on a floor bed and staying with her until she falls asleep....not sure if that will help or not but I'm terrified of her climbing out at night! and a part of me is hoping maybe she won't fight going to bed so bad if she is on a floor bed?

We have had this since 17 months, it seriously sucks and she doesn't respond to the sleep training method we used previously anymore (one where we stay in the room with her). I think we!re going to hold off now until we transition her to her own room with a floor bed and then try again. I hope you have more luck than we're having. Why don't kids understand how AMAZING sleep is? :silly:

No advice but OMG this terrifies me, since I feel like we have had similar sleep issues :( Will she calm down and go to sleep if you stay in the room with her? Not that that's a great habit to get into but I remember one of my friends with an older LO saying that it got them through a rough patch.

Wahhh my 19 month old is sleeping so horribly! It all started a little over a week ago, and carried over to our mini vacation to see my family, and now we've been home 2 nights and it still sucks! I have no clue WTF is going on! She is fighting sleep like CRAZY and waking up super early. Getting maaaybe 9 hours at night, when she used to regularly do 11-12 straight through.

I tried re sleep training her tonight and she screamed bloody murder for 45 minutes straight, I couldn't take it anymore  I went up and rocked her, but she woke up once she hit the crib- I left the room and then the screaming ensued. This time, she climbed out of the crib! yikes. Is it time to transition to toddler bed? Is she EVER going to go to sleep peacefully again? I have no clue what to do....
