Was he just wide awake or crying when not going back to sleep?

I agree with others that it could be a tooth. My kids have had a crazy bad night of sleep out of nowhere and then the next morning *poof* tooth.

My kids also sometimes have bad dreams that they have a hard time coming out of. Even if they seem awake, sometimes they get stuck in this drowsy, crying state. We have to turn the lights on, and often sing, read a book, or look in the mirror to get them to truly wake up and calm down.

@Mrs. Pen: this happened to us last night but she woke up about 45 minutes after we put her down. Pretty sure it was a tooth.

My toddler still does this sometimes at 18 mo, as often as once a week. Sometimes he will go back down with the paci, sometimes he will drink some water and be ok, sometimes I have to stay in the room until he falls asleep. It definitely is worse when he goes to bed late..

We had a similar situation last night, only he woke up and started screaming at 9 pm. We ended up rocking, soothing, and giving him some tylenol. He fought it for awhile but eventually went back down again. I think DS's issue is a molar that is about to break through. I hope that this doesn't happen again.

Though it has happened once in the past, and he just cuddled with me for about an hour at 1 am and then went back down and slept the rest of the night. I have no idea though, because those screams were "I hurt and I'm unhappy" not "I can't get back to sleep" screams.

Good luck!

Wow. Not really so I'm not much help. She does have mornings though that are super early and she's just wide awake. We usually just get her up at that point but obviously you couldn't do that!

I almost posted this at 1am because I was just so confused...

So J went to bed a little after 8:30 last night, about half hour later than usual. We went to bed at 10:30 and J wakes at 12 crying, I just go in give him his paci and expect him to go back down like he normally does. No such luck, after half an hour still crying I get him up and nurse him which I haven't done (night feeding) in nearly two months! Still didn't sleep! 1am I finally woke up dh and he rocked him for awhile, still didn't go to sleep!

It was an exhausting night. Has anyone else's previously well-sleeping toddler fought night sleep for no apparent reason??
