Oh ..... what about using the pack n play mattresses ( we have the 2 in tall mattresses....not just thr pad it came with) on the floor and try to pretend it's like school cots?

Do you think that would work? We could each room share with a child but not be restricted to staying in bed with them.

@meadow: we have the best cams, too, and have also traveled with them. We set them on top of dressers, sometimes with a few boxes or boxes stacked up under.

I wouldn’t worry about skipping the nap either. My 2.5 year old also is an awesome napper. But we regularly skip her nap under certain situations and then put her to bed early. This hasn’t caused her to drop the nap at all.

I just realized I will sort of be in your same situation soon. Long weekend. Only one pack and play for the little baby (the full size Nuna). I’d like to get a second pack and play, maybe the travel guava that unzips. Husband wants to put the big girl in a regular bed with her cousin. But I really may push for the second pack and play and try to justify the expense.

@ALV91711: that is immensely reassuring. I don't want the trip to just eliminate naps for good. Especially the first week I am home with them for 2 months (teacher bee here)

I am banking on this being potentially our last summer of naps!

I’d try just putting them in the bottom bunk together. Have the pack n plays with you as back up in case. I think I wouldn’t worry too much about nap. If they seem tired/cranky out then down but otherwise let them be and do an early bedtime.

With DS1 whenever we have travelled we have shared a bed and it has never created a problem when we returned home. He napped until he was 5! But when we were away starting around 3 I just wouldn’t worry if he wouldn’t nap, sometimes I’d just have him do some quiet time if needed. He’d always go back to his regular napping routine when we got home.

So the bedrooms are so tight in our rental there is barely any floor space. The room with bunk beds they slept in last summer......with pack n plays in room, the dresser and closet blocked and there was about 2 square foot of floor left. None of the bedrooms have room for a us to remove a mattress & put it on the floor. In "our" bedroom there is room to walk around the bed on one side h foit....then 3rd side gas space for maybe one pack n play.

Since we cant fit full size cribs anywhere I wont rent a mini crib....seems silly.

@bhbee: good to know about your monitors not interfering.

@runnerd: there good to know .... our kids are the same age ...fx!

@agold: ok so we use nest cams at home....easy enough to transport....we would just need to figure out a way to mount them without leaving a trace :p

@lioneyes: are those better than pool noodles?

I would just put them both in the full-size bed together. Or if it's high, take the mattress down and put in on the floor. We've done that when traveling with both our girls, and it's fine. And they don't have problems re-adjusting when back at home.

FOR NIGHTTIME: I would get the blowup/foam bedrails on amazon, and put them both in the bottom bunk full bed with the siderails on to keep them contained.
FOR NAP: I think you will have better success with nighttime sleep at that age if they dont nap or just do a quick car nap. On vacation the summer my DS was about to be 3, we wouldnt put him in his room to nap and it made sleeping through the night, even in a strange place, much easier. If he seemed exhausted during the day we would take a midday drive and let him snooze while we listened to the radio.

Are they deep sleepers? Like if they fall asleep separately, can you move one? That’s what we did recently when my two wouldn’t fall asleep in the same room, but my older daughter is a really deep sleeper in the beginning part of the night (like roll off the bed and not wake up deep). Would you consider renting cribs? And would they both fit in their room?

I’m really not sure either. I know I tried to put my then just turned 3 year old in a pack and play over Christmas and she just looked at the big bed in her room and at me like, ma, this is ridiculous. I’m sleeping in the big bed.

I would try to keep them contained, knowing that possibly it won’t work (ie bring the pack and plays but have a back up). But maybe crib rentals wouldn’t be that expensive?

My mom brain couldn’t even follow all that! :silly: what about getting a video monitor? If I had the chance to go on vacation, I’d consider investing in a video monitor. Not sure if that’s an option or even helps. I’d probably bring pack and plays and not co-sleep.

I don’t have a solid solution but our nearly 3 year old transitioned to bed about 8 months ago. He is our good sleeper so RARELY, count one hand, co slept before bed. Now when we travel we co sleep with him and never causes issues or new expectations when we return home.

Will they be tired out by vacation? That might help them nap in the same room if you want them to. You could always try it. When my son was 3 he slept on a blowup toddler mattress on vacation, so it was easy to move around. It had some sidewall which I think made it feel cozier for him, but clearly he could get out if he wanted. We really liked it as a sleep solution for travel at that age.

It was something like this but I think we found a better deal. There are cheaper ones also without the wall part.
Intex Kids Travel Bed Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0085YGTGW/

I think co-sleeping will probably be fine too since you’ll be in a new location. Also I currently have two monitors at home (different brands) and keep both receivers by my side of the bed and no issues. Maybe you could set them to use different channels if they interfere?

SO. My twin 3 year olds are still in their cribs. They also still nap. ...Yes, I know I am lucky.

This summer we anticipate doing the crib to toddler bed transition --- sometime AFTER our vacation the last week of June.

Here is where I am nervous. I don't know how to get them to nap/sleep while on vacation. I think at this point they are too old for pack-n-plays. They 100% could climb out - they haven't demonstrated this to me.....but I know it is a likely fact.

At home, nap and bedtime is hit or miss. There are days where they lay down and are asleep before their 15 minute music ends. And other days where falling asleep takes 2 hours and involves all sorts of antics from singing/talking to each other/playing catch with their stuffed animals/stripping off their clothes or pjs/removing all animals/blankets from their crib to form a mountain between their cribs/retrieving said items... etc.

I am not really comfortable with that level of activity in a room alone in their pack-n-plays.

Also - they have ALWAYS slept in the same room with the exception of the days only one has gone to daycare due to illness of their twin.

The rental we are staying in has 3 bedrooms. My parents will be in one. One bedroom (that they shared last summer) has a bunk bed with a full mattress on the bottom bunk. The other bedroom has a queen mattress on a normal bed frame.

The option I am mulling around with right now is that we split the twins between my husband and I and each take one child to co-sleep for the week with.

- drawback would be introducing co-sleeping as an option since it really hasn't been a thing for them...worried what they would expect when we return home.

-drawback would be that I would effectively have to nap with them instead of having some chill time of my own since they have never slept in a bed before. I would also have to go to bedtime with them instead of hanging out with my extended family.

Another option would be to bring the pack-n-plays and put them in separate rooms for nap & bedtime. This worries me because I don't know how they will react to being apart like that. However, being in a pack-n-play I wouldn't have to stay in bed thru nap/bedtime. I would stay within earshot as they fell asleep to make sure they aren't being unsafe, but I think the antics will be less without their partner in crime....

-drawback would be that I only own one audio monitor - and I would imagine we would have static/feedback issues with setting up a second monitor in such a small space?

WWYD?
