My son is 4, but I've come to realize that I have to spend a bit of money if I want to get my son outdoor gear that actually works. Boots were my biggest issue, because a lot of the ones in the $30 range weren't warm or flexible enough, so he was having a tough time walking in the snow.

I feel like I've made a lot of mistakes in winter gear, truth be told.

@winniebee: thanks! I am going to grab those for my son, he really needs a functional pair of mittens and those look perfect.

We just took LO sledding this weekend. He wore bib snowpants, a winter jacket, bog boots (which are waterproof and lined so they stay warm--they're amazing), and he wore fleece mittens from the Gap that he actually kept on the whole time!

I think since you rarely have cold weather, you would be fine in rain boots and a few pairs of socks, especially if you'll only be out for a little bit.

@winniebee: are they the toddler split mittens? I am intrigued!

We have marmot toddler mittens. They go way up his arms and Velcro to open wide and he loves. I think snow boots instead of rain boots. We have Kamik - again the kind that Velcro closed and open way up.

Maybe something like a Buff to keep her neck warm? Also if it's really cold some thermo underwear/tights.

Some fatty cream for her face if it's cold and windy. We use this http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/9663.aspx

For the mittens maybe you can run a cord / piece of yarn between the two gloves so she doesn't loose them. We have the same mittens and they have little loops that you can use.

Sounds like fun - enjoy yourselves!

J wears gloves (they're just from Target, he loses them all the time) when he skates. I think she'll keep them on if she's cold. :)

I personally don't think rain boots are warm enough. I would get warm waterproof boots, unless maybe you have boot liners for the rain boots. How cold will it be? If it's really cold, maybe something like a balaclava instead of a regular winter hat? My son always wears a balaclava since I'm so worried about his neck getting cold since he doesn't wear a scarf, and they stay on, unlike most hats.

We *might* take LO up to the mountains this month (or next). I'd like to let her at least try skiing or sledding on a small bunny slope. We have a Columbia jacket/overall set I got on sale last year and tons of beanies. I'm sure we'll have to rent boots and helmet if she tries to ski. I think we have a pair of waterproof mittens, but I can already see her hating them.

What else should I get for something like sledding/in snow weather? She will be 21/22 months and very active.

Does your toddler wear mittens or gloves (with fingers)? Do you think it's worthwhile to get snow shoes for something like sledding or building snowmen, etc.? Or are rain boots sufficient? She'll have Uggs just for walking in the cold, but I know they're not waterproof.
