Our soon to be 4 year old is like this. She still naps at daycare and then at night can't settle down She plays with dolls, sings, gets out of bed and reads books, etc. We have found on the weekends that she doesn't nap and goes on to bed without playing as long.

I would take out the markers/crayons/ anything messy and let her go at it. She just may be outgrowing her nap. LO knows she must stay in her room though.

You can't make her sleep unfortunately :( I tell my daughter who is 2.5 that she doesn't have to sleep, but she has to stay in her bed with her lovies. She often chats with them for 30-45 minutes before she falls asleep. Our rooms are right next to each other so I can hear her if she gets out of bed, but I would put the monitor back if we weren't so close. Every time she gets out of bed, I just go and plop her right back in. I also insist that she "rests" during her normal nap time, with the same no-getting-up rule as bedtime. 99% of the time she ends up napping for a little bit at least. Definitely hide all the art supplies though!

If she seems to not be getting enough night sleep because of it I would put up the art supplies and all but three books. I would really insist on the regular naptime too. I know you can't make her sleep, but you can hold that rest time at the same time as daycare to stay consistent. That will probably fix the evening couch snooze problem.

Yes - there's nothing we can do. Except if it gets past a certain time we tell her she has to stay in bed. No more reading! Also sometimes we will put her to bed earlier anticipating she will read for a while.

LO has not been the type to play quietly in her room alone. She likes to be with us in the living room or wherever we happen to be in the house. She'll play independently sometimes, but always in eyesight of one of us, preferably.

Lately, she's started getting out of bed and coloring in the night, and we have no idea because she's just in her room playing quietly. She woke up this morning covered in marker. I don't really care about her coloring, but I don't want her to be tired the next day. We quit using the video monitor a long time ago, but maybe we need to break it out again to monitor her and make she is getting adequate rest. And maybe we should put the art supplies away so she can't access them at night? She also "reads", and I don't want to like...you know...hide her books! Reading is good!

She started refusing to nap at her usual nap time on the weekends (she's in daycare during the week), and then falling asleep at like 5 PM on our couch. I wonder if that late nap is contributing to the overnight art projects. Should we not let her nap on the couch anymore? She's obviously tired! Moving up bedtime never works, she always has some inner sense that it isn't her usual bed time yet (8 PM).

Does anyone else have this issue? What did you do?
