@Tanjowen: Here's what we did with my son:

http://www.hellobee.com/2012/07/17/how-to-avoid-sleeping-next-to-your-child-until-they-fall-asleep/

My daughter has been the same way, but she's our last kid and since life is a little easier with both kids older... I just have sucked it up with her.

We got those turtle lights for both kids, and that helped a lot too!

My daughter went through something similar a few months ago. I think she was having nightmares! Our solution was to get a nightlight and leave it on all night. We also have one of the music and lights things on the side of her crib, and sometimes turning that on seemed to help. We really kinda had to re-sleep train her, too. We would lie her down and say, "Good night, I love you, I will see you in the morning." and then if she cried for 15 minutes, one of us would go in and rub her back for a bit, do some shushing, and then say the same thing and go back out. Then we'd wait ten minutes, then we'd go in every 5 but without the talking. It only took a few nights of this before she could go down again without a struggle. We left the night-light, though, because it does seem to soothe her and help her through this MOTN wakings.

@winniebee: I tried CIO last night , 2 hours solid and no sign of stopping I gave up, I mean, it can't be healthy ? Or maybe he's just far more stubborn than I care to admit .

I remember a few times like this after travel around that age. I think we just did CIO with checks if needed at that age. We would have a few brutal bed times then be back to normal.

@Tanjowen: Yes, we dealt with the same thing! I even had to hold his hand while he fell asleep. Finally we re-sleep trained, and it got a million times better!!

Also, I should add that we have a very consistent bedtime routine and bedtime is 7:30 pm. We don't do screen time before bed either.

We've had our fair share of night awakenings the past 2 years but I've never had any issue getting him to happily fall asleep in his crib (I know, I'm VERY fortunate ! ).

We went to TX to visit family last week and since our return he has flat out refused to fall asleep unless he has eyes on one of us. Naps included. Our current handling of the situation is to sit at his door until he falls asleep and then leave , but he wakes up every 2 hours screaming. He just started talking and isn't very verbal and he's extremely stubborn. He's not verbal enough to reason with at this time.

Any ideas, similar stories or just commiseration out there ? We are tired and frustrated and scared of creating poor sleeping habits in him. :bummed:
