We just started at 17 months. The first class was mostly getting used to the water. The teacher said they will work on skills as the weeks progress. Mostly I wanted something to tire her out as the weather gets colder and it's tougher to go outside, and LO likes it. It seems like the 2-3 age probably learns more actual skills though if that's your main interest.

We started w a Mommy & Me class at 2 - she learned to jump, reach with her arms, and to climb out on her own. We did another session at about 2.5 and I feel like she's learned quite a bit - floating on her back, kicking, blowing bubbles, swimming w her arms, and climbing out.

Honestly I think anything under 2ish is more just to get them used to the water.

I looked into it for LO but around here the classes start at age 3 unless we did private swim lessons. So I guess we're waiting. :silly:

I started taking LO at 4 months, he adores it! At the very beginning it was more a case of getting used to the water and going under water etc. He has definitely learned from it, he will now kick along in the water (as I hold him!), he will push himself forward into the pool on cue (from sitting on the side), and he also knows to hold onto the edge and put his feet against the wall. The lessons are expensive but it is the highlight of his week.

We always planned on it, but my LO is such a fish, I didn't think the lessons were necessary since she was beyond the basics by 2. She already blows bubbles, ect. So we will just take her swimming this winter to keep her used to the water.

@JoJoGirl: haha yeah that's what I want to avoid.

@mrsjyw: that kind of thing sounds better, learning to go under, float. It's not like I expect her to swim laps before two or anything.

We did swim lessons with LO was 6 months and I'm going with 'waste of time'. We got in the water and sang songs. The same songs every week. I could've done that for free in the bath.

It was worth it cause she LOVED it!

We started in January of this year when DS was 13 months and continued through August. We swam with him, but he learned things like going under water, reaching for things, jumping into water, floating, doing "strokes". We'll be going back to it in the next month or two.

ETA: we took lessons at an aqua-tots and love it there. Our local county pool lessons were in a cold pool and the "instructors" were just high school kids and they didn't do a very good job of teaching the young toddlers anything substantial. It was more water play than anything.

We started just after he turned a year old and it was just to get him used to the water and being in the pool. He's a September baby, so we wanted him to get some pool time before the summer to see how he liked it.

We're going to start when she's about 2 so she has them under her belt before this summer. she *LOVES the water, so i hope it's a good investment :)

B did them at 6 months and again at a year.
Honestly he didn't really get much out of it other than getting used to the water. I managed to teach him more on my own at 18 months.

How old was your LO when you started swim lessons? Did they actually learn how to swim, or was it more just getting them used to the water?

C is 15 months. Thinking about starting some kind of swim lessons but honestly, don't want to pay for them if it's only about getting used to being in the water. The gym near us has family swim sessions for $10 a family where we can bring her to just play in the pool, which is cheaper and more convenient than lessons. But if it's a fun class where she will learn some and be entertained by the teacher, then I might ask for it for Christmas...
