Oh man, I totally forgot about the whole tick thing. Ugh.

@MrsTiger: I'm glad they don't seem to be too worried! Hopefully it was just a normal boring tick :)

Update - I called my nurse's line that night and they said to just keep any eye on her over the next month or and bring her in at any sign of weird rash, fever that lasts a few days, or general fussiness (um she is always generally fussy :-)) She also mentioned a lot of @Mrs. Twine's tips.

Thanks for all your help!

We probably had hundreds of ticks growing up. If it was a big tick it's probably no big deal, if it's a teeny tiny one then that's more worrisome, but you would start to see a rash around the bite that looks like circles if it's Lymes. We just pulled them off and flushed them as kids.

@MrsTiger: And no need to get too crazy about it. Most of the stuff (tucking in clothes, wearing a hat) we only do when we are likely to be in an area where we can expect to have 30+ ticks per person on coming inside. ;) Doing a casual check after coming indoors and putting clothes in the dryer to get rid of lurkers if you find any on you is usually a pretty reasonable level of precaution.

Sorry you found a tick on her! My mom found a big, engorged tick on my brother's head when he was a kid and he turned out okay. Nothing ever came of it. She felt like a crappy mom for some time, though like, how could I not see a tick on my kid's head? Well, you don't inspect every inch of them every hour of the day!

I'm sure she will be fine but I like the suggestions of taking the tick in with you if they want to see her. Also, try to stay calm. :) I had a tick bite that got the bullseye around it a few weeks later a year or so ago and nothing came of it. Ticks are such jerks to be out so early in the season!!!!

@Mrs. Twine: Thanks so much! I hadn't even thought about ticks since last summer we didn't play outside because she was barely crawling. I definitely realized we need to be better about checking when we come in and we'll try some of the other things you suggested too.

@MrsTiger: It's also a good idea to note/circle the area where it was found. That way if the ring-rash that indicates Lyme shows up you are more likely to catch it. Not all ticks are carriers; deer ticks (really, really small: smaller than a pencil eraser) are the usual culprit. It's heavy tick season here and we have tons. :/ We try not to stress too much, but it's good to practice some general tick safety measures. We try to tuck in clothing as much as possible when we are in tick heavy areas, wear hats when practical, use Badger Bug Balm or a Bug Band, and as soon as we come inside our clothes come off and go in the drier on hot for about 10-15 minutes to kill any ticks that might be on/in them and we do a quick visual tick check and then hop in the shower to finish off. We don't do this every time we play outside all spring/summer long, but we definitely do if we know we will be where there are lots of ticks, and in the first part of spring when there are a gazillion all waking up hungry from winter. I'm sure she will be just fine, but it's good to be careful. <3

@MrsTiger: my brother was bit by a tick as a kid & has Lyme disease. I would personally call now for peace of mind. He's healthy but is almost 26 and still sleeps a lot.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Thanks for the response, I'll call tomorrow morning first thing since we already put her to bed. I called my parents for advice and they were like "no big deal"…must be a generational thing!

@MrsF: that helps, I hope you are right!

@MrsH: Ha my husband saved it in a ziploc, but then when I went to pick it up the tick was gone. Turns out he had brought up two bags and moved the tick one somewhere safe, but I was FREAKING out that there was a loose tick in my bathroom!

I would probably call the Dr just to be safe, but if it was really big then it was probably a wood tick rather than a deer tick and you don't have to worry about Lyme disease. Glad you found it!

Absolutely! I might even call on-call/after hours to see if they want her to be seen tonight.

And, save the tick. They'll likely want to test that, too.

Help! My 20 month old DD had a tick behind her ear tonight. We found it when giving her a bath, and have no idea how long it was there because we didn't give her a bath last night. The tick was super engorged and big.

My DH was able to remove it completely and we cleaned her ear off, but should I call her Dr. tomorrow / take her in?
