@Foodnerd81: ack! Sorry! I think someone in the chain of replies was following along for long and lean suggestions, and I got confused.

I've definitely found I can fudge it A LOT by sticking to stretchy bottoms.

I did find it helpful when we were in that size transition for the first time to go into places like Target/Carters that have overlapping size ranges, and lay two pieces (one in 4-5, one in 4T or 5T) over each other to see what the difference really "looked" like, if that makes sense.

@Foodnerd81: primary could be worth trying for leggings too. My daughter wore their yoga pants for her school pants this past year and they fit her all year - long enough for long legs but not huge in the waist. I’ve never tried the leggings but they have free returns.

@PinkElephant: she’s definitely not long and lean right now- she’s moving that way but has a toddler belly still. I hear you on the appropriateness of the “girl” styles sometimes. I did order some XS bike shorts to wear under dresses from old navy that were so small- way smaller than 5T.

I stuck with the 5T for now, though I got a shirt in 6-6x since short sleeve T-shirt’s can definitely be worn big. She never wears real pants like jeans anyway. It’s dresses or leggings or skirts/ skorts.

Agreed with @HappyBaker: In most brands the girls size (4-5) is longer and leaner than the 5T.

My eldest is 6, and she's about 45 inches/38 lbs. 6-6x is definitely too big for her - I can't imagine fall styles in this size would fit your little. Summer sizes might work depending on her waist/whether or not she has a bum. :) :) Mine doesn't, so she still wears a 4 in bottoms (or smaller if it isn't too short).

Long and lean things I've found include: H&M skinny cut jeggings, Justice (I know, gag, but they actually have some cute-ish scooter skirts) skorts with smocked waists, and Walmart (Jordache) jean shorts a few sizes too small. Leggings are really hard...honestly she wears a lot of tights or knee socks in the fall/winter to avoid trying to figure out leggings. Tea Collection are very skinny, but also a little short, so we actually size UP in those. We look for actual drawstrings on bottoms, or adjustable waists, and wear a lot of dresses with bike shorts to avoid skirts/shorts that slip down and show bum crack.

It's a hard transition, both just in terms of fit and in terms of style appropriateness.

I've been having this struggle. DD is only 3.5 but she is 38 lbs and 42 inches. 5T clothes are getting too short but are still wide on her. And whenever she tries things on from the girls section the fit is even weirder. So mainly following along to see what others say...

My daughter is the same size as yours (maybe 0.5” taller) and we don’t buy size 5 anymore. She can wear a 5-6 but a regular 5 is tight. A 6-7 is definitely too big. Carters and OshKosh she’s a clear 6. I don’t really buy jeans right now because she’s in between. One note is that despite being the same height and weight my DD is still toddler chubby so her belly can hold the pants up.

Not sure about Carters but I know at Target the 5T leggings are actually bigger and longer than the girls 4-5 ones. I held up a pair of 4-5s, 5T and 6-6Xs a few months ago because I couldn't figure out which one would fit DD best. She's still wearing the 5T ones.

@bhbee: thanks- that makes sense. The 6-6x def wouldn’t fit her yet then. In which case I may as well save $1 and order the 5T for now. 😂

5 is definitely bigger than 5t but not sure about 4-5. You could call a store and ask, I know I have heard them explain it but don’t remember exactly.
My daughter is more like 48/48 and i buy her 6-6x bottoms due to length, but as she’s not big in the middle (long legs) they are almost too big to wear in the waist (carter’s at least).

My almost 5 year is getting close to outgrowing 5T clothes, so going forward I was wanting to get her the next size up. In Carters/ OshKosh, is that 4-5, or 6-6x? She’s about 41 inches tall and 41 lbs, I think- fairly petite, with still the last traces of toddler chubbiness. Mostly I’m just looking at leggings that she won’t wear much before the fall.
