I don't think the bottle makes a difference, but bottle weaning is still a good idea for healthy teeth. As for the sleep problem, this was a long, long phase for DS and I did wait it out, but I had next to no me time until he was 2.5. He was in our room, so I'd lie in bed and tell him stories till he fell asleep, and then I'd fall asleep myself and there went the evening.

@LBee: so he napped today (probably because his sister was gone). he asked to nap at 11:30 but didn't go down. I went back up at noon and he went down. he just woke up at 2:50

I think I probably will push nap back until 1:00 just to see if I can get it to happen more consistently.

I would probably take this opportunity to bottle wean. Other than that, I'd wait it out.

I know that we all claim on these boards there is a regression at every age, but I promise you up and down that 18 months really is a rough time for sleep. I couldn't tell from your post - when he doesn't nap, does he still have trouble falling asleep? My son didn't go down at that age until 1 PM and was woken up (he would randomly nap forever if someone didn't wake him up) by 3:30 PM. Bedtime was at 7:30 PM. If anything, I might would try pushing back nap a little and see if that helps.

@Mommy Finger: yeah, its been kind of rocky since 18 months. he doesn't want to miss anything, and is having a language explosion, so i'm sure something is going on.

When DS was around 18 months, he had a horrible time falling asleep. He would stand in his crib and cry. He would start to fall asleep while standing up and then jolt himself awake. Ultimately, I would cave and bring him into bed with us. One night I tried to just leave him there thinking that he would eventually get so tired and go to sleep. He did that for 4 hours until I caved! Worst week ever. Ultimately, we just had to wait it out and then he went back to normal. I did a lot of research and found that there was an 18 month sleep regression so it might just be hitting you guys later?

My 21 month is the same boat. Used to be give a bottle asleep most nights as soon as it's gone. Now we're up for an hour before he falls asleep. His schedule is very similar to yours but our bed time is around 8. We've been trying to move it up but haven't had much luck - using the theory of sleep begets sleep. I'm not sure what we're going to do now... Have you maybe tried pushing back his bed time till like 8? and see if he sleeps in? Other then that I don't have any suggestions but I'd gladdly commiserate with you.

Should I do something, or wait it out?

My son (19 months old. actually almost 20) has been having trouble falling asleep for a few weeks now. At bedtime it takes him nearly an hour. If his sister is at home (two days a week) it takes at least 45 minutes to get him down for a nap (with multiple tries), or he skips it all together.

He has been having a bottle right before going to sleep. He used to fall asleep/get very drowsy with the bottle, but lately he's still wide awake. On the days he goes down for his nap well I sit with my hand on his back for about 10 minutes until he's asleep. At nighttime we just leave him up there he talks/cries a little for about an hour before falling asleep.

I should probably bottle wean. Will that help? Or does it not matter, and its just a phase?

We put him to be at 7, he usually wakes up around 6:30. I start trying for nap at noon, he usually sleeps about 2-2.5 hours on the days that he actually naps. Today is not one of those days.
