Hmmm. Mine usually wakes up happy (20 mo), but sometimes he wakes at too short a time frame and cries. I let him be in there for a few minutes because he will often re-settle and go back to sleep. Then when he wakes up for good, he is usually quiet, and I give him more time to wake up before I go in and get him.

My son is 16 months and wakes up cranky almost everyday from his nap. He is usually crying when I go to get him. I always just thought it was because he needs some time to wake up. I know when I wake up from a nap I feel super groggy and it takes me awhile to wake up so I figured maybe that's how he feels. I'll usually snuggle with him then see if he wants a snack.

@Sparkler: that's so interesting. We sometimes do a show after nap (or he snuggles with me while I finish MY show) and then he's fine. He doesn't seem like an overtired kid in general and for at lesasf a year had gotten roughly the same sleep in a 24 hour period (he just sleeps more at night now).

Sometimes, usually when he's overtired - he will often go back to sleep if I leave him for 10 or 15 mins. J sleeps from 8 (we start the bedtime routine at 7:30) until 6 or 7 in the morning. We start the nap routine at 10:30 and he's asleep around 11 and wakes between 1:30 and 2.

We had an odd week or two of happy playing in the crib wake ups. Typical wake up though is crying until we get her. After a few minutes of snuggles she's awake and ready to continue her day.

I remember some infant sleep book talked about this and called it sleep inertia, so I think it's a real thing. We have this issue most days, so we just do a tv show after nap before a snack and that usually does the trick.

@winniebee: Not really! he's just super grumpy. Sometimes I try to get some juice in him or something in case it's a blood sugar thing, but usually he's so grumpy he won't even accept that special treat! TV works while he snaps out of it but I hate resorting to that.

@winniebee: Ah...bummer. I thought maybe it was the reason! Do you think he misses you or is afraid? We have a night light in LO's room now and make it a point with him to turn it on every night and during naps so that he wouldn't get scared of a darker room...

@winniebee: Is he teething? I find that LO's mood waking up from a nap will depend on whether he's teething.

LO wakes up from most nap as if she had been sleeping on hot coals. She usually takes nice, long naps, so I think it's just her way of doing things. Who knows. It kind of drives me crazy to have such a jarring "alarm" to the end of nap time.

Liam is sometimes like this. I think it helps if I give him some alone time in his crib before going to get him. He usually wakes up quietly, but if I go in right away (or if I have to actually wake him up), he'll start crying or be cranky. If I let him have some time to slowly wake up, he's usually happier when I go in.

My LO goes in stages of happy or upset wake ups in the morning and from naps. I wish I knew the reason, but I still don't and he is almost 3!

T wakes up from most of his naps crying. He recovers but it makes me wonder if he's overtired? He wakes up at 6:30 /7 and starts his nap between 12:30 and 1 (though I usually put him down at 12:15 or 12:30). He goes to bed at 7:30/8.

Eta - he usually only sleeps 1.5 hours, which was the length of his morning nap as a baby.

Is this normal? As an infant he always woke up from naps happy and cooing.
