@Applesandbananas: we were just talking about this this morning. We feel like she is more likely to try and climb over the mesh rails, so we might try the pool noodle or a body pillow just to discourage rolling out, but not encourage climbing over.

So the update from last night- she fell asleep, in the big bed with me next to her, at 11 pm. Brutal. She also had a super long nap so I won't be letting that happen again. Up at 7 as usual and not surprising, pretty cranky.

We have to decide what to do about the bed- get a twin for more space in the room, keep the big one... And I'm thinking we might just take th frame off the bottom so it's a little lower but keep the box spring and put some blankets under just in case she rolls over the pool noodle.

@T.H.O.U.: I have a feeling this might be an issue, but she is already used to us laying with her. I think we will try to enforce it but see how it goes...

She still naps fine in the crib so it should be fine to crib nap and do the bed for night, right?

I think this is one of those situations that it's not really up to you your child is ready so you have to go with it. Our daughter made the choice at 18 months (YIKES) by continuing to climb out of the crib, it was a safety issue for us so we removed the front of the crib and then bought a single bed a couple weeks later (she stayed in this better than the removed front/toddler bed due to be higher up.) We also used one of those mesh rails and just took it down at 2 1/2 years old.

@T.H.O.U.: such a good idea. I need to start enforcing this. I do lay next to LO while we read stories and do night routine, since I'm so hugely pregnant and can't hover bent over her bed for long.....but I always leave before she's asleep.

Whereas my husband will stay till she's asleep, and it actually takes way longer for her to fall asleep because he's there. ETA: maybe I should get him a chair!

We used a bed rail and moved her to a twin bed just before her second birthday. Kinda crazy but she did great. She wasn't climbing either but she was asking about the big bed so we went for it. We still used a monitor because she wouldn't crawl out without us.

One thing we really did was to not lay down in bed with her. We pulled up a stool next to the bed and would rub her back or hold her hand but that was it. I would make sure she isn't wanting the big bed just to be next to you.

@Foodnerd81: I've also seen people put pool noodles under the fitted sheet, to serve as a bed rail. We tried it once and it worked well (we were traveling).

Our lo has been sleeping in her queen size bed (sitting on the floor) since about 2 years old. She is 3.5 now. When she first started sleeping in the queen bed, she would simply cry to get us to come into the room. I still used the baby monitor so I could hear her immediately. As she has gotten older, she will walk into our room to come get us, but that didn't happen for quite some time. Best wishes!

@Applesandbananas: we could, but we have nowhere to store the box spring. Plus we have bins stores underneath the bed but I guess we will have to deal with that stuff soon enough anyway. Sometimes I want to move out of the city and have a house.

Update: it's after 9:15, originally put her in her crib at 7:45. Still awake, now laying in the big bed and talking to herself. Ugh. Laid down with her for a long time in the bed but she still wasn't sleeping. I guess her really great nap this afternoon is biting me in the a$$ now.

Ok it sounds like I'm going to need to give in pretty soon. The crib is going to stay anyway (since the baby will be here soon enough and we have no place else to store it) so we can always go back and forth, right?

Off to look at rails for the bed I guess.

We just went through this. LO was crying in her crib and pointing to the big bed. One night, when I said, "No, that's Nana's bed. M sleeps in the crib" (because my mom sleeps there when she visits) and M said, "No, My-My's bed!" And pointed to the big bed again.

So she's been sleeping in the big bed for a couple of weeks--her sleep is the exact same, which is....crappy. Her first 3-4 nights in the big bed she slept like a dream--STTN and just called for us in the morning. But now she's back to her nightly wakeups, but that was also happening in the crib.

She doesn't run around her room though! She doesn't really get out of the bed--just screams for us at the top of her lungs.

This happened to us a few weeks back! We weren't ready either.... but we were dealing with 1.5 hours screaming per night and so, when E fell in love with a toddler bed at Ikea, we thought we would give it a try. I think she just wanted the freedom to get in and out by choice... (and she was soooo close to climbing out!)

We started by converting the crib. Well.... she kept jumping on her bed and then tripping over the guard rail and face-planting the wooden floor. Fail. Long story short, we ended up with a mattress on the floor. We're calling it a "Montessori floor bed" but it's more like something out of Trainspotting. :meh:

Anyway... she loves it. She runs about her room for an hour most nights, in the dark..... but it's better than the screaming so i'm going with it. We had to totally toddler proof after a particularly bizarre incident in which she opened her wardrobe, got out her swimming arm bands, put them on, got back into bed and went to sleep.... ....

Once she is ready to sleep, she usually gets back into bed. Sometimes she falls asleep half in and half out - or falls out of bed - but it's okay..... Screaming is minimal now!!

@Foodnerd81: Gotcha, we already had the conversion kit so it was a relatively easy (already expensed) way to give it a try.

@Smurfette: I can tell you that having a full bed is great. I do lay in her bed with her every night (or her Dad) and read to her. We sometimes do the same on the weekend mornings. And if she's sick, I'll sometimes climb in with her to keep an eye on her as well. I'm so glad we didn't do a twin bed.

@MamaG: we can take off the side of the crib, but I feel like that's the worst of both worlds in our situation- too small for me to lay down with her if needed, and I don't think she would really like it much better, but she can still get out and cause havoc. I'd rather just get her a twin since the new baby will need a crib anyway.

I might be wrong though and she could love it as a toddler bed, but I don't feel like buying the conversion kit.

Do you have the option to convert the crib to a toddler bed? This might be an interim step for you? It wouldn't remove the need to babyproof though. We moved our LO to the toddler conversion right around 2. And then to a full bed at 3.

And at nearly 4, she still very rarely gets out of her bed. She'll call for us sometimes even when her things hit the floor.

@Smurfette: what size bed do you have? Do you have rails on it?

I'm thinking we should get serious about baby proofing and get a rail so we can try just leaving her in the big bed next time. Right now it's too high off the ground to sleep without a rail and she would roll right into the corner of the crib.

Looking for thoughts and advice on toddler sleep.

Background- C is almost 23 months, generally is an ok sleeper (STTN in her crib, almost always takes at least a 1.5 hour nap). We have a queen bed in her room (former guest room) as well as her crib. When she wakes up in the middle of the night, most recently seemingly from a nightmare, DH or I will go and lay down with her in the bed and sleep the rest of the night like that.

Recently, maybe every other week or so, she has a night where she just will not go to sleep, crying and yelling no matter what we do, until finally one of us lays down in the bed with her and she goes to sleep there. We move her to the crib an hour or so later.

I really don't want to move her to a big bed yet, her room isn't totally baby proofed, and we were just planning to wait a few more months. But I'm wondering if it's coming sooner than I thought and I need to accept that. Anyone experience something similar?

We also have a new baby coming in dec, who will share the room with C eventually by will be in our room for the first several months. We could borrow another crib or give the new baby C's crib.
