We turned the knobs around and lock it from the outside. I feel safer knowing he can't wander. he fell asleep by the door for a few weeks during the transition but eventually he started falling asleep in his bed instead. the locked door creates a boundary snd I think that helps. if dh wasn't so handy we would have done a child proof door knob cover instead.

Our LO would just climb over the gate so that did not work for us we tried the door handle but that resulted in a potty accident. Honestly it's been a struggle for a long time for us, she's been in her big girl bed for a year now (she was a crib climber) and most nights she falls asleep on the couch and we transfer her to her bed.

We had to use a gate for both kids.

They are allowed to use the potty excuse 1 time that's it (since you know they just peed 1 min before they got in bed)

Once they are asleep the gate gets taken down in case they need to come get me or use the potty at night.

@SeptMomma12: DS is 2.5 and we just potty trained (like literally this month). He is in undies during the day but still a diaper at night. But- most mornings he wakes up dry so I don't know if it will be an issue. He has slept with his door closed since we moved him to his nursery at 4 weeks old, though, so it is really all he has ever known.

We do have nights where we have to go in there multiple times but we made it very clear that even if he wakes up he can NOT get out of his bed. So if he wakes up in the night or when he wakes up in the morning he sits on the edge and calls out for us!

ETA: we are still using his video monitor so we watch him until he falls asleep!

@SeptMomma12: He wasn't potty trained at the time. But we still have Monitor in the room and he could ask to go if he had to. Once it's obvious it's a stall tactic,I would stop taking him though. When you go to bed, you can open the door fir middle of the night potty trips?

We put a child proof doorknob cover on the inside and shut his door. He got the point pretty quickly and now we can leave the door open without problems.

Can you put a baby gate across his doorway and tell him he can get out of bed but can't come out of his room?

DS will be 3 in September and we transitioned him to a toddler bed about three weeks ago. The first two weeks went great, but for the last week, he refuses to stay in his bed at bedtime. Just keeps coming out of his room. He tries the "I have to go pee pee" excuse a few times, and then he just starts coming out for no reason. We're going on an hour and a half here tonight. And he's exhausted - dark circles under his eyes, meltdowns, etc.

How do you get your toddler to stay in their bed?
