@HappyBaker: I think someone else mentioned it, but this is pretty much exactly what happened with T just after his 1st birthday. The fever kept spiking to 104.7 or so for 3 days. It came down to maybe 102.5 on meds. It broke at the end of day 3 and we thought we were in the clear. 24 hours later he broke out in a horrible rash. Roseola. It wasn't fun but there wasn't much we could do. Benadryl seemed to help the discomfort from the rash slightly. Luckily O (2.5 months younger) never got it somehow.

@HappyBaker: we had a virus like this over the summer. Just out of nowhere she spiked a scary high fever even alternating meds. Brought her in and they said to just keep her comfy, push liquids, and alternate medicines. Lucky us, 3 days later she came down with an ear infection too, but unrelated.

It ended up being a moot point because he woke up almost exactly every 3 hours anyway. He was burning up all night even with the alternating doses, and today was still hovering around 104.5, so I brought him in. His ears are clear, his throat is red but a rapid strep test came back negative. They also ran bloodwork and a urine sample just because its been 2 full days of such a high fever and no other symptoms. I just want him to feel better :-( He's so sad / exhausted.

@MrsF: Thank you!

Like other mommies, I voted sleep. They'll wake when the med wears off and start to feel uncomfortable. You can re-dose then.

Let them sleep, you generally don't wake a kid with fever unless they are near dangerously high (105+). If you are nervous about overnight, keep premeasured syringes of meds handy or get tylenol suppositories. I have an ear thermometer that I use on my LO and if her temp is that high I just pop in a suppository really quickly. If they get really miserable they will wake up and let you know. Cool cloths to the groin, armpits, and back of neck are good for fevers, but they will likely be mad at you. Hope they feel better!

@gingerbebe: I premeasure too! Makes it so much easier.
@HappyBaker: good luck tonight! I would also try to sneak a temp or just feel and make a judgement call. High temps make me nervous. I hate waking him but if he was burning up I might panic and do it.

We have some sick kids right now. Letting them sleep! And I rarely take temp, i go off of how they feel. I don't pre measure the meds but keep everything out in the bathroom with syringes ready to go and ice water in their rooms. Good luck!

@Mrs D: I did the same thing- sneak in and feel her or take temp with the forehead one but I never woke her up.

@gingerbebe: premeasuring is so smart. I can't believe I never thought of that. The best I've done is make sure we have clean medicine cups or syringes in the kitchen.

We went thru this recently with DD...I would go into her room and take her temp without waking her (forehead thermometer)...I would also just hover my hand to see if I could gauge how bad it was...

Fingers crossed for you!

@HappyBaker: our older kid was sick a ton this year so we had to figure out shortcuts. We also installed push lights in the hallway and in DS' room (whatever cheap ones they have at Amazon with picture hanging command strips). They emit a low intensity light that doesn't blind anyone and keeps DS sleepy but it's enough light to see meds and diaper changes.

@MrsF: @Mrs. Sunshine: thanks you guys are so sweet!

@gingerbebe: the premeasured medicine and water is genius! Last night we kept scrambling around to find everything! He has tubes and nothing's coming out so I'm pretty sure it's not an ear infection, but I'll take him in tomorrow if it's still so high.

Definitely let sleep. We keep a small teacup with Tylenol and Motrin pre-measured and a Thermos of ice water in the hallway whenever DS is sick (we even buy one med in grape and one in cherry or bubble gum so we can keep them straight!). Makes the wake ups much easier. If it's something like roseola there's not much else you can do for a few days until the fever breaks and you get the rash. But you probably want to rule out ear infections.

@mrsrain: @muffinsmuffins: Thanks guys! I totally would call but felt bad because I called earlier today and for some reason I don't like bothering them? Totally stupid I know. I'll give them a call and see what they say :-) And yes definitely have everything ready for when he inevitably wakes up!

DS is 21 months and for the past 24 hours has had a fever that seems to just be getting worse. Started out 101/102ish and would come down with Tylenol given every 5 hours. Since this afternoon it's been holding steady at 104, even with the medicine, so we've started alternating Tylenol/Motrin every 3 hours.

We just put him to bed, but should we wake him every 3 hours overnight to check his temp / give more medicine? We usually just let them sleep through when they are sick but I'm nervous for it to get much higher!
