Thanks all!

You are totally right and while it sounds awful our ped said mono usually doesn't hit kids this age as hard as its hit my DS, and that most kids get it when they are little and just never know they had it.

We found out with all the blood work that there is other stuff going on which is why things are worse for him, so meeting with some specialists this week to figure it out!

I got it in college and was told similar to @FLnative12: that most kids already get it by that point and it just passes by as a childhood flu-like illness and it sucks more the older you get.

Hope your LO gets better soon.

Somewhat related - I contracted Mono at the ripe old age of 30! Much to the amusement of the ER doc that diagnosed me (my Mom happened to be staying with us and insisted on taking me to the ER b/c my fever was so high and not responding to meds). When the Dr came in and told us what the problem was my first response was 'wait, what?!' And then we all just laughed because seriously...what grown-a** woman gets Mono?! I had to call my boss, in the first week of a new job, with that as my excuse - the whole thing was bizzare.
My DS was 14 months old at the time and the Doctor told me that in toddlers it is very common and very mild - normally just a fever, and I most likely picked it up from DS who picked it up at daycare. Most adults have already had it so it's no big deal, but apparently I wasn't kissing enough boys in high school lol - so I never got it. The older you are when you get it the worse it is.

Basically - based on what they told me it should not be a big deal for the other kids, but if anyone in your family has never had it or any of the teachers - they should be careful. I don't remember the incubation/contagious period.

Good luck - I hope LO feels better soon and I hope you don't have to stress about missing much more work. :goodluck:

Omg!
Mono knocked me out for a month when I got it :(
I haven't heard of many toddlers with it.
No advice, just hugs!

Bump - anyone? I talked to daycare tonight to see if they had an official rule on it and they said they'd have to call corporate and ask (it's a chain).

I posted earlier this week about DS (21 months) fever and whether we should check his temp at night. We are now on day 5 of fever over 103, today finally the tylenol/ibuprofen seem to be making a difference and he is not so tired. We had mentioned Roseola to them, but they did blood work on Tuesday and again today and they are 95% sure he actually has mono. Still waiting on the definitive blood result.

Anyone else have a toddler / preschooler who has had mono? What did it mean for going back to daycare? I feel like you are contagious for SO LONG with mono, and he still puts stuff in his mouth. We took the entire week off this week with vacation days but don't have any more left, so I'm thinking I might have to take unpaid time off if he can't go back.

Any tips much appreciated if you've gone through this!
